2006 RR L320 is my power steering pump failing? |
|
I got abit carried away in the snow friday and at one point 'lost' power steering. When this happened briefly i could smell a burning smell. And the steering makes that winning/groaning noise when steering.
I checked the power steering fluid level which was abit lower then the lower limit. (I know it was higher that that before).
I removed the n/s/f lower front access panel to be able to see the power steering high pressure and low pressure hoses (which were covered on oil - as was the power steering pump pulley). It looks like the belt had splat the power steering oil around.
I cleaned all the area and hoses and ran the engine for a while. I could not see any signs of leak.
After a test drive and top up of fluid i had partial steering failure again when trying to get full lock as well as that awful noise. - as soon as i got back i checked the hoses and and surrounding areas which were covered in oil again. The power steer fluid has dropped slightly again.
As this point i think the seals could be shot on the pump which leak under load and the pump pulley spreads the oil about.??
I did check the banjo on the high pressure line which was tight.
Has anyone had similar problems on the disco 3 or similar RR L320?
Mines the 4.4 jaguar V8. I have ordered a new power steering pump and both drive belts. - i have to have reliable steering as the wife drives it and it needs to be safe and we use this as our tow car.
I hope this sorts the problem. I plan to clean out the power steering fluid bottle while im at it.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
Spencer.

both belts ? (the supercharged 4.2 has 2 belts) (the SC belt is about £50 IIRC)
yes sounds like the pump. On full lock it puts maximum pressure on the pump, so avoid full lock until pump replaced

Agree with you and avoiding full lock is what i am doing.
My 4.4 non supercharges has 2 belts. Primary serpentine and a secondary drive belt.
Cheers
