tdv6 oil type,

hi, can anyone tell or advise me as to what oil land rover dealers generaly use ie, mineral or synthetic as i am going to change the oil in my discovery and i dont realy want to cross contaminate whith different oil types. i have noticed my dealer has never put what oil they have used on the service record and so this is why i am asking. Rolling Eyes
thanks again, jim.

Has anyone come across a non-dealer source of this stuff? I imagine they're not the cheapest. Halfrauds don't stock it.

Halfords do stock it (at least the one near me does the Castrol GTX version), it's not particularly expensive from dealers though

Miller oil's do a range that covered all type that were required for the D2, I haven't looked but I would expect they cover the D3 as well.

My manual states:

"Land Rover recommends Castrol"
"Diesel 5W/30 meeting ACEA:B1 or B2"

Got my 5 ltr Castrol from Halfords for around £27 nearly 3 years ago [for top ups] ...
still got about half left!

So what's the stuff that's hard to get outside the dealer network and why is it needed [taking into account LR's recommendation is widely available]?

AFAIK any Diesel 5w/30 B1, B3 oil should do the job
The 5 being the viscosity when cold and the 30 when hot.
Engines with a DPF need to be C1 instead of B1 or B3

Heres something I noticed... Was going on a long drive a short while back (Jan 08 Skiing) and decided to change the oil/filter combo in the D3 before leaving as its service was due in a couple of months.

Anyway - changed the oil to a fully synth Castrol that meets the spec per the handbook and immediately noticed the motor was much much quieter. Put that down to it being new oil and was very pleased with myself...

Anyway - got the car back from its service yesterday (from a network dealer) where presumably they changed the oil to the LR branded stuff -- guess what the motor is back to its old noisy rattler self - ok still pretty good for a diesel but quite noticably noisier.... so in future I will be choosing the oil brand that meets the spec and not using the LR stuff !!

Why not ring the dealer who last serviced your car?

Guy Salmon use Mobil 1 synthetic AFAIK. I'm sure thats what it said on my last service bill Confused Not the cheapest, but seems to run well enough, and its not worn out yet!

Read somewhere that this had been discontinued and that it's now Castrol Edge?
Still seems specific to VW though.

So would this be OK in a D3 as a high quality oil.
What's best?
