Front end clicking noise at low speed - fixed

Adding this note in case it is useful for anyone else in the future. In my case this issue was a front brake.

My car was - as you can guess - making a clinking noise from the front at low speed. A guy even came up to me to tell me in the car park at Lidl! I let it do this for about 2 weeks before yesterday taking action. I was readying myself to discover a failed CV and recorded a couple of "is this normal play/backlash" videos ready to post here as I investigated. To do my work I drove to a self-garage which meant that it was on a ramp which probably helped my diagnostic process.

Before taking anything apart I noticed that the drivers wheel was slightly - but not much - warmer than the other wheels. I had previously changed both hubs for Timken and both half shafts for GKN so I was ready to be sad if one of these had failed. The rest of the suspension is newish Meyle HD. So I focussed on the brakes. I stripped everything down, cleaned the pistons and pushed them all the way home. I cleaned the pads and removed and cleaned the guides and re copper-greased the guides. I flipped the pads around when re-installing.

As a result I fixed my issue - for now at least.

I believe what was happening was that the brake pad guides - which I last touched when installing the pads some 5 years ago - were gunked enough what one pad was chattering/sticking in a guide. Maybe in due course I'll discover I have a sticking piston but that's a problem for future me!

It's a rent-a-ramp workshop. Just hire a bay for as long as you expect the job to take.

Then add 1 day as it's a Land Rover Laughing
