Weird gremlin: christmas tree when downshift above 70mph |
|
Dear community,
We have decided to use our 08 disco3 tdv6 auto for our summer vacation in the north west of Spain.
On our crossing of Spain from Barcelona, all was good and the disco was a champ.
Here, where the weather is wetter and it either raining or that there’s mist 60% of the time, we’ve started experiencing a very weird gremlin:
Going on the motorway at about 70mph 6th gear, we arrive to a climb. The disco downshifts to 5th gear and every once in a while after a few seconds in 5th we get a lovely and cheerful christmas tree dashboard. (Yellow lights only!)
Our dash shows all the usual suspects: hdc fauilre, hand break failure, motor management failure and and the suspension failure and is lowered. Motor goes to limp mode and transmission to F.
We pull over, turn the ignition off and then on, and ALL IS BACK TO NORMAL
I don’t have access to a GAP tool at the moment.
Any advice apart of taking it easy on the truck on uphills?
Thanks in advance
Dror

My guess would be a failing battery or an earth problem. If you have damp carpets, check wires in the front sills.

My first d3 had a similar problem when it went over 60mph it would go into limp mode - if restarted it was fine. Was fixed under warranty and put down to a faulty ABS sensor. Does it still do it if it has the dynamic stability control turned off? Must stop buying shiny toys....

Hi @darrind
I will try it, though going fast without DSC sounds a bit scary.
I want to emphasize that it only happens a few seconds after the gearbox downshifts from 6th to 5th on an uphill section.
Thanks a lot

ine did it when going uphill or under load at 60mph in a straight line, mainly going uphill on a local dual carriageway, LR dealer had it up the same road and had the same problem, read the codes (before I had an IID)swapped over the sensor and I was back on the road in around 2 hours from dropping it off. Must stop buying shiny toys....

Update: turning off DSC did not help the issue. Still getting yellow lit dash but now (unsurprisingly) the DSC error is not present.
Any leads?

If you use manual mode and shift into 5th, does it do the same thing?
Without codes it's only guesses left, but as its occuring under (high) load, that could point to a fuel starvation issue? Defender 110 SE 2021, Tasman Blue

@1784 thanks for your reply.
Actually, today I fiddled quite a bit in manual (commandshift) mode on uphills, and got 0 errors.
Does it help in any way with the diagnosis?
Truth be told, I hope to find a least uncomfortable way to go on with our summer travels without having to tow my D3 all across Spain to it's garage.
If manual mode on uphills will turn out as the solution- that's fine by me.

Got some codes from IID. many U codes about modules failing to communicate (but nevertheless doing so quite nicely... )
The codes are:
P000E-22 Fuel volume regulator control - Learning limit exceeded - Amplitude of the seal above the upper limit
P0087-00 Pressure in the fuel line/system - Too low - No secondary type information
Amazingly enough - that's all the P codes.
We were on a long journey and refueled at various gas stations, which most probably differ in quality of Diesel fuel.
could this be an issue with the fuel filter not doing it's job correctly and just needing replacement? 🤞🏻
Background:
HPFP was replaced in official JLR dealer 2 years ago.

Is the first from the gearbox ?
Clear them and see what returns.
See if both return as a pair

Pete K:
These P errors are the ones left after clearing all codes and running the test again.
Both errors originate in the motor module.
Sorry, in missed the "Fuel volume regulator control" in the P000E-22 error. Now edited and corrected.
Thanks

Could this just be a dirty fuel system and that a couple of cycles of Wynn's injector cleaners and turbo cleaner just do the trick?
I don't seem to see any other option aside of the fuel system and the HPFP is 2y/o...

I would say that one of the first things to check is battery connection. The clamps here in the US are notorious for not holding really well and will loosen up. while they will maintain connection in certain driving conditions they cause the electrical systems to go haywire for a brief second.
Probably not your issue but worth a check.

@protohyp thanks.
I've already checked it and the battery connection is fine.
We don't have harsh weather conditions or very salty roads here ocer the winter so it's far less common.
