Just about to jump....
....into the deep end and buy myself a D3.
After several hours of reading this great site, I'm 90% convinced that a Discovery 3 is for me.
(10% is still saying get a shogun...) I have a couple of questions,
Is it worth getting an IID tool prior to buying to check faults etc?
I'm handy with the spanners but can anyone recommend an independent specialist close to Woking/Guildford, Surrey area ?
Thanks
Gareth

IID, yes, if you intend to keep the vehicle and want to diagnose things yourself without taking into the shop for a reading. It’s a really good idea.
And yes, I would read the codes from the vehicle while looking it over. Most people don’t reset them it seems so you’ll most likely get a bunch of old historical ones too... think of it as an archeological excavation
The IID will let you read the codes from any supported vehicle.

Good idea Paddington thanks
kajtzu thanks, I upset a dealer once when I turned up with my VCDS to buy an Audi, the list of faults was massive. thankfully I walked away.
I usually keep my vehicles 5-10 years so IID might be worth the investment.

Once you buy an Iid tool you are committed, they won’t work on a Shotgun
p.s. you don’t really need one for a D4, D3 yes as the are lots more updates you can do to make it like a D4 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
IID Pro MV License - D3, D4 & RRS - Enabling, Updates, D4 & RRS Timed / Remote Climate, D4 Bluetooth fitting

The only was an IID would help pre purchase is if you downloaded the codes, posted them here for a day or so for checking and then purchased a few days later
Generally these have so many codes logged a beginner can't see the wood for the tree;s and may miss something important.
P.S It's the gearbox codes I would worry about if I saw them!

It’s only money.
Besides, an adventurous life is a life worth living even as poor

shogun's aren't very nice to drive, but as least they don't need a replacement engine at £4000+ like LR

4K does worry me! though not afraid to get the spanners out if needed. Fingers crossed I find the right vehicle...
I've seen a couple of engine issues too with shoguns i.e timing chain tensioner's and fuel pumps.

I bought a Warranty Direct (seem to be the most recommended one on here) warranty when I first bought my D3, just for peace of mind. Cost about £600 at the time but in the end I got about £2k of repairs out of it (including a new Torque Converter at around £1.2k). There is evidence on here that they pay out for blown engines too.
Depends on how much you value peace of mind, but it kept me going (and paid itself off) whilst I spent the first year getting to know the car.
