relay? in the box next to the battery marked SM
Hit with a screw driver handle first. if that don't work, swap it for another.
maybe the headlight washer one may fit

well if it clicks it can only really be 2 problems.
1) starter motor failed.
2) The thick cable (that is bolted under the front of the engine in tube) has shorted out on the front diff and blown the mega fuse below the battery + terminal (in black plastic case)

Tap on starter motor got it started.
I assume it needs servicing / replacement?

That's a classic failed/failing starter motor on any car. Might as well fit a new one

Actually it's not necessarily a new starter motor, depends how handy you are with spanners.
I had a MK3 Cavalier that used to exhibit the same symptoms - needed the RAC spanner to get it to start. I took the starter off, stripped the solenoid apart and cleaned it all up, re-greased the mechanism and the car started happily for the rest of its life with me.
I'd suggest taking the starter off first, and bench testing it to see what happens. Then clean the moving parts related to the solenoid and re-test. If it works, then put it back in the car and enjoy the fact that you saved £££!!

disconnect battery
remove large metal under tray
look under on the drives side of the engine and locate start motor
loosen 1 10mm? bolt which holds the diesel/coolant heater exchanger in place and swing it out the way.
disconnect the 2 wires from the starter. 13mm? and 8mm (the smaller one has a captive nut thankfully.)
loosen the 3? 13mm? starter motor bolts and then remove them and then you need to wriggle the starter out, which can be fun!
The gearbox under tray probably needs to come off too, 4, 10mm bolts
