Settle a pub debate for me please?
So me and another Landy freind are discussing immobilisers in the pub and he says that a Disco 3 immobiliser is only deactivated when the key is In the second position in the barrel (all the dash lights but not cranking). I’ve been told different and that the chip in the key only needs to be near the ignition barrel for the immobiliser to be deactivated and the key doesn’t even have to be in the barrel if you had fitted a push start kit for example you do away with the barrel all together (we did this on an old escort we raced!). We have no way of proving either theory so we are putting it to you lot!
Thanks

I think you are both right in your own way.
It would be a very poor imboliser if the car started by bump starting.
It would not meet the required standards!

The real argument is if the key needs to be in the barrel or could just be waved next to it. For example if you bought a blank key and had it cut would you need to hold the blipper bit to the steering column to start it?

Consider how you code a new key.

I can rememeber on the D2 the car would let the engine start as it processed the key then if it didnt like it, it would shut the engine down.
Some trucks will only crank if the chip has packed up and others will crank and start but only run for a second or two then die if the chip has had it.

Wave the key near the barrel or have it physically in it?

I had a Fiat Punto years ago, and only had one key for it. I wanted a spare but the cost was extortion.
So i was told that if I got 2 blanks cut at Timpson so that they would physically unlock the car and turn the ignition barrel, then glued the original key (or at least the plastic bit of it) inside the steering column shroud next to the lock, it would work!
I never actually got around to trying it, but logically it would work. Security risk yes, but on a £500 car not the end of the world when a new proper key was 100+

Yes it works as Gareth has suggested. I know it is common to do this on a particular type of commercial vehicle.

possibly an age thing where you stop commenting on boob sizes and leg lengths and talk about car stuff instead.

To try and settle the argument I've ordered a cheap push button start kit on Amazon that's arriving today. This should wire into the ignition barrel and prove if the key needs to be in or out to start the Disco (we had a few and there is now a £50 wager on it so worth the £12.99 for the kit)
