Battery Charging Voltage

So a few weeks ago the disco wouldn't start when it was about -3 degrees. It was turning over but wouldn't fire at all. RAC arrived and hooked up battery booster which had no effect, but it started as soon as he applied some throttle while cranking. He said it could be glow plugs on their way out (although it did have its 90k cambelt service 3 months ago so not sure if they were done then).

Anyway it's been fine since but I have only been using it about twice a week for short journeys round town. I last used it Thursday though for a good hours drive. This morning it started fine as usual but after about 5 miles it said 'low voltage' on the radio, and it muted itself. After another 30 minutes driving I restarted to see it had changed, but this time the satnav screen was black as well. I drove home and left the car running on the drive for about another 30 minutes. Then after it had sat for 2 hours I went and used the menu on the car to look at the battery voltage (I don't have a multimeter). (This time the radio and satnav came on as normal).

Key in ignition, engine off - 12.6V
Engine started - 13.8V
Engine on for 5 minutes - 13.8V

Those readings are probably slightly inaccurate but do strike me as fairly low. The starting issue a few weeks back may have been isolated and just down to the cold temps or something else unrelated, but I'm now wondering if the low voltage is due to a fooked alternator, or atleast it not working properly??????

(PS. RAC man said battery is fairly new. No idea how he could tell!)

Buy a decent battery charger and use it regularly if you only do short trips Thumbs Up

The voltage without it running seems pretty good pointing towards the battery being in ok shape (i did say pointing towards before anybody says anything) but the voltages with the engine running are very low, i would expect to 14.5-15V if the weather is cold. My first thoughts are alternator is on its way out.

Thanks for responses guys.

I've been monitoring it on most drives the last week or so and the reading while driving generally stays around 14.2 only fluctuating by about 0.2 volts either way, so I'm reasonably confident all is well. No idea why the voltage dropped so low when I had the symptons, but perhaps it was just down to not enough long journeys.

In other news, I heard a 'bong' yesterday but no message or lights and then about 20 minutes later the engine light came on. It's come on once before, and went off when I re-seated the fuel cap so I'm not panicking just yet. My first thought is EGR though as it was cleaned in October and was VERY gunky, and I have noticed that it's quite laggy when pulling off. But anyway, battery not much of a concern any more. Thanks!

Apologies to reply to my own post, but just for the benefit of anybody who finds this by searching in future - My engine light mentioned above went off after 2 small journeys of about 3 miles. I have no idea why, or whether it will return soon. It may have been fixed by replacing the fuel cap like it was last time, it may have been because I drove it for about a mile in command shift mode, or something completely unknown. But anyway, nothings worse than a topic with nobody posting an outcome and mine is that the battery voltage seems okay, and the engine light is off. Hallelujah.
