11 mph site speed limit?

In the roadworks on the M27 the site speed limit (i.e., for the worker's vehicles) is 11 mph.

Why 11? Why not 10?

11 mph doesn't equate to a nice round figure in kmh (or knots) but does work out at approx 5 meters per second.

Any ideas? I need to know!

there used to be a speed limit sign on the M63 (now M60) / M62 junction that , IIRC, was 42MPH … they thought the "odd" sign would make folks notice it more.

I remember going past some road works where the speed limit was 9mph and another where it was 8.5mph. How can you even focus on the speedometer when you're bouncing around on a dumper truck?

I used to be based on a site where that insurance stipulated that sorted had to be below 5mph, so they had a sign made up that showed 4 3/4 mph.

When they were building the site of the 2012 Olympics that had a blanket speed limit of 9mph, inforced by speed gun. They would take your name and who you were contracted to, two in a week you was banned from site for a month with the contractor given a warning.

I guess 11 is the LIMIT but 10 is the "recommendation" e.g. over 11 you get a blocking so drive at 10 and be happy and safe.

I imagine that the people that set these glacial speed limits also want work completed to a very tight deadline? Rolling Eyes
