Likely costs of keeping a 5 year old D4 a few more years?

Have a five year old D4 on 65k miles. No advisories on MOT (local garage) and just had LR service. Question is do I move it on on run it another 2-3 years at 15k miles pa?

I have just the rear brake lines replaced with copper. Fronts will need doing next year but the cost is not high. Talking to the garage it is likely that in a year or so I will need front lower arms and rear upper arms. I would have this done at my local garage and would not use LR OEM parts. What sort of costs for this?

I will also need new brakes all round at some stage in the next year and then there is the year seven belt change. I tend to get LR to do the annual service to keep the (virtual) stamp but use my local garage (they drive D4s) for other work.

I guess depreciation is now only about £3k pa so that is the trade off against repair costs. Lots to think about!

As a guide, my D4 is just 6 years old, 13 reg. now has 103k on the clock.

Just had front lower and upper, and rear upper wishbones replaced. Main dealer price was a tad over £2300 😂 Luckily Warranty direct paid all but £450. This was the second replacement of the front lower arms, main dealer did them at 72k. No idea why they failed so soon?

I have just done all the brakes myself, using Britpart discs and pads. No issues so far and not very expensive parts.

My brake pipes are fine so far, no visible corrosion.

Helpful, thanks. My rear brake lines needed doing to pass the five year old MOT but we use a lot of road salt up here. Have used non OEM brakes before and am happy with them and the much cheaper prices. Suspension bushes going at about 80k is what I am told but not as many motorways up here either so less cruising in the total miles.

Mine is 2012 and just hit 140,000, I hate to jinx it, but all is going strong.

I replaced the rear uppers last weekend (I do the work myself so pretty cheap) the front lowers were replaced last summer.

I'm currently going through the 'should I' phase.. but at the same time, I love my D4 and thinking of just taking the risk and I guess absolute worst case I'll be putting an engine it..

Still undecided..

If I was in your shoes I would keep the D4 for another 2-3 years without a doubt.

I would change the belts now & fit a new oil pump at the same time. When you sell you will have part of the benefit of the new oil pump, and in the interim will sleep better. A private purchaser will also recognise that early belt & oil pump change shows prudence - IMO.

Finally I would cost & consider taking out a suitable warranty & maybe GAP insurance, whilst these are still available to you.

My 2012 D4 HSE with 78k miles just had the 96k service with belts and zero advisories done at Wimbledon LR. I changed the brakes to better ones from Brit Parts. Just don't see the point of selling her privately (I was bid £20k) or trading it vs a new D5 HSE (equivalent £62k from Carwow) when the dealer offers me £15k. I've been lucky that she's been pretty bullet proof.

I took mine up to 8 years, 9 months.
Belts done, suspension done, turbo drain mod. Rear brake pipes replaced - that was about it though front suspension needed some attention before I chopped it in.

Had about 115K on the clock.

All above probably cost c.£2K at local indy over 2 years over an above usual servicing costs and tyres.

Interestingly, I just checked it for an MOT and plate can't be found - even though when I checked in February it had just been taxed and MOT'd - so maybe its now on a private plate (or heavens forbid - a W/O?)
Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.

Trouble is, middle of the range, 18month old D5s with average miles are down to 35K now.

Some good stuff here, thanks.

Am looking at an XC90 and they are ok but nothing is as good as a D4.

All WBAC values of more expensive/big cars have been collapsing but when Brexit etc is sorted I am sure there maybe some recovery. I'm more worried about Euro 5 diesels being banned from the Scottish cities medium term as that would cause me a headache.

I think that the suspension/gearbox flush comments are worth following. As for the belts service, I am happy to wait until year 7. Brakes are cheap enough so will deal with as and when.
