Front NS Lower Arm Bushes |
|
From what I can glean from the site it sounds like I need new front lower arm bushes - clonk from NSF over speed bumps and potholes and when I stab the brakes - on my 55,000 mile 2011 D4 HSE.
I would appreciate any feedback on doing this job myself; I did successfully replace a rear lower arm assembly on my last D3 so I wonder how this compares?
Any advice from members would be much appreciated.

Easy enough job if you can drive a spanner (and a grinder)..
I wouldn't spend more than 10 minutes trying to undo the old ones, if they don't come out then just cut them off.. Although my last ones came out fine..
For a week or so before I did mine, I dowsed them in penetrating oil every night..
Buy the complete arms with bushes fitted from AF, it makes the job much easier than pressing new bushes in etc..

Your car will need fully tracking after, I would make sure the rear upper arms are ok, as if they go in 6 months time, you'll have to pay to have it tracked again, It would be worth changing the front lowers and rear uppers at the same time and just have it tracked once.
Find somewhere that uses the Hunter tracking systems. Disco4 MY16 SDV6 Landmark Black

Brilliant service - much appreciated Browny90!
Do you have a view on whether the polyurethane bush equivalent kit from AF is worth the extra £48?

No worries
Someone else can probably help with that question, but if you do a search on here then you should find plenty of info on them..

Poly isn’t what the manufacturer intended for the vehicle. If you like a harder ride it might be good for you. If you want the original ride, don’t. There have been a few pictures/reports of people with broken arms and poly bushes on various forums.
FWIW - I wouldn’t polybush mine. YMMV.

There were some good deals on genuine arms on ebay under 100 quid per side.

Thanks Kajtzu and Lynalldiscovery for your feedback and good advice. I have decided to go non-poly, do the rear uppers as well and to go with Advanced Factors.

D4 front lower control arms |
|
Hi
I thought about attempting this myself but decided I didn't have sufficient equipment. I believe an air hammer is almosf essential and ideally the tracking and cambef needs resetting afterwards.
I just had it done by the local dealer for £1150, so not a cheap job.

Sounds like mine needs new bushes too.
If I’m getting dirty and having to get the car alignment done then I may aswell do every Bush.
What bushes are under there for front and rear? Will order them all online. I’m assuming lower arm has 3 bushes, anti roll bar bushes, any upper bushes?

You can surf new.lrcat.com or for example advanced factors web site to see what parts you might need.

Every arm fixes to three bushes and there are four arms.

Er, no.
The front arms have two bushes and a ball joint each, the rears have two bushes each at the chassis end with bushes (actually ball joints) in the rear knuckle where the upper and lower arms connect, there is also a link arm from the chassis to the rear knuckle which sets the toe-in for the rear wheels, this has a ball joint at one end and a bush at the other.
Advanced Factors do kits for all the arms which include bolts and have a 4 year warranty (cost verses time to change the bushes makes it worthwhile), to change the bushes in the rear knuckle you will likely need to either acquire or make the special tools and/or use a hydraulic press. Access for the rear anti roll bar bush bolts is not great.
