D3 will not start and it's a dreaded intermittent problem |
|
Any thoughts on the following, which is being displayed in a 2007 D3 GS auto.
I had just filled with diesel, unlocked the motor and turned the key to start and nothing. Doors locked and unlocked with the first message being rear off side door open (it wasn't) followed by usual HDC fault, plus hazards. Door open message disappeared, but still wouldn't start. AA chap turns up and she starts first turn of the key. He follows me home and we try a few start cycles. Faults read and the only thing showing is an immobiliser error (happens with both keys). He clears that, we start it a few times without incident and he leaves (fatal). It is still displaying the same symptoms intermittently with messages saying parking brake auto release fault (which is new) plus HDC. Nothing wrong with the parking brake which appears to be working normally. I also have a full compliment of brake lights and have replaced the pedal switch. Also, there are no codes and the immobiliser code has not reappeared.
I charged the battery overnight and used the car this morning. Stopped three times and re-started without incident. Driving home and sound of locks throwing accompanied by clock/temp display disappearing, hazards on, no aircon, no indicators but car driving normally. Stopped at home and would not re-start for 45 minutes with same symptoms as yesterday but only HDC fault today. Again, no codes. Battery showed 12.8 volts.
It has been starting fine since (but has not been driven). Battery now showing 13.2 volts at rest, 13.9 volts on tickover.
Any thought/suggestions gratefully received.

How old is the battery?
Whats the battery voltage after standing all night?
Whats the battery voltage a couple of minutes after starting?

Battery was replaced December 2016
I’ll check the other two in the morning.

Mine did this and it was the ring around the ignition, IIRC it holds the key reader for the immobilisor Mark

The immobiliser aerial could be a good shout, given the code that the AA guy read initially, plus the other symptoms - hazards etc.
Does anyone know whether the engine would actually stop running if the immobiliser lost contact with the key fob i.e. if you were driving at the time?
If the answer is no then that would point to the aerial or surrounding wiring being the problem

Yep, just have
12.55 volts from overnight.
Car started normally - charging at 14 volts dead at tickover.
Engine off after a couple of minutes and battery showing 13 volts

If you have your car running and then take your key away from the car, it should tell you the key is not in the car or that’s it’s lost comms but it shouldn’t stop.

Sounds like water ingress. Possibly the ecu plugs that are situated behind the battery. There are lots of cases of the pins getting corroded by water. Have you jet washed the car recently or driven through deep water?

Check the earth wire to the engine, fit a temporary earth with a jump lead if you can. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I thought of water ingress and it appears to be as dry as a bone behind the battery. No jet washes or deep water recently.
Earth look fine but worth a go.

I don't think this would apply whilst you were driving along; my ignition barrel failed so for a few days I had to turn the switch normally attached to the end of the barrel with the key blade whilst holding the fob next to the immobiliser ring. As soon as the engine was started the fob could be removed from the ring so it is active only at start up.

It might be worth popping the plugs off the ecu’s just to check for corroded pins.
From previous posts on here, it’s a can-bus issue, and the ecu’s are a common culprit. There are others I’m sure, but need input from others who have experienced this.

I've popped all three multi plugs off, plus a couple of beefy connectors in and around the battery and cleaned the lot (I'm sure my daughter won't mind me using her nail brush - I did clean it up afterwards).
Put it all back together and can't as yet reproduce the fault. Also and this may be my imagination, the motor seems to be running better.
Fingers crossed.
