Hello! And buying advice sought... |
|
Hello all,
Popping over from fullfatrr. With the imminent arrival of child #4, I'm coming to terms with the fact that the L322 is no longer going to fit the bill as the family bus
So I've been looking around for something that would meet the requirements:
1. Must be able to transport me, wife, three young children, a baby and baby paraphenalia
2. Must be able to transport 2 fairly large dogs (although not necessarily at the same time as above)
3. Must be able to lug big pieces of timber, plasterboard etc back from Wickes
4. Must be good for towing my trailer full of assorted building/diy materials
5. Must have four wheel drive and good ground clearance (we live on a farm)
6. Must have a luxury feel (been spoilt by RR)
7. Must not be a "people carrier" (I've not given up on life yet)
8. Must not be French.
So I went to look at a Q7, but that just felt too cramped and the boot floor is really high (thinking dogs). Was weighing up a seven seat X5 but none for sale within shooting distance.
Come to realise that a Disco 4 would fit the bill, and had a look at a couple locally, which has confirmed this.
So looking at 2012-2013 Disco 4, 3.0 SDV6 HSE. The thing that has me worried though is the snapping cranks. How much of a thing is it? I appreciate all cars have issues, and some have a reputation for particular issues. Folks would have you believe a RR would leave you sitting beside the road many times, but in 5 years of ownership, mine's only done that once, a couple of months ago when the chocolate gearbox grenaded itself.
Other than the crank issue, is there anything else I should be checking?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Matt,
Reading through this forum you may suspect that the crank issue is a big issue for all D4 owners, however there are many of us here that have had no problem with the crank and are still loving the D4 with high mileage. (Have said this very very quietly as I don't want her to hear cos we all know what will happen )
If you click on the Search button at the top of the page (under the snow covered D4) and type "Buying a D4" there are lots of threads to plough through.
Happy hunting and hope you find the perfect D4 for you Uncle Ray's spare wheel protector

Ive posed the question elsewhere on this forum,
how many D4 have been sold globally against how many have snapped their cranks ?
there are many on here who have experienced it but that ''could'' account for 90% of the snapped cranks in the D4's 7 years of manufacture ? 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

That data does not exist.
You can find out from public sources
- how many D4s were manufactured each year [for sure]
- share of diesel (ignore the petrols) [probably]
- the amount of people reporting a snapped crank on this forum
I don’t think it would be a very accurate number if you extrapolated the total amount of snapped to manufactured ratio based on the above.
Similarly, JLR probably doesn’t know the figure either. They’d only get reports of those that end up at the main dealer.
While the forum has a lot of members, I would imagine that there are a large number of D4 owners who are not members.

it was kind of a rhetorical question.... the answer will remain one of those great mysteries as im pretty sure that JLR would never divulge numbers even if they knew 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten
