flat battery clicking with jump leads
Hi. I have a 2005 disco 3 auto and unfortunately it was left too long and the battery is completely flat. Tried to jump start it from my husbands toyota van but there is just a repeating clicking sound and no attempt to turn over. The battery was absolutely dead (wouldn't unlock with fob). Is it likely to be the battery or alternator/starter motor. The car is definintelt past its best and I dont want to spend if I can help it.

Hi,
I would suggest leaving the cars connected with the van running for a while. It takes a lot of current to start and if tge battery is that flat you need to charge it a bit. If its clicking though, it could be the started and the solenoid is engaging. My first try would be to get some decent charge in the battery first.

If it (battery) is completely flat, and for longer than 24h it is dead... begond repair.... that is just chemistry
Just fit a new or good one, with the right capacity...
If it was left too long.. that is the reason, not the alternator or starter...Best regards

I have personally seen it where the flat battery is so dead it would not jump start, as the dead battery sucked all the life out of the jump car, new battery and problem iwas nstantly solved.
Sounds like the van isn't providing enough oomph to start the disco... my son's fiat punto couldn't start my old 300tdi but if left running for 10 mins it charged the battery just enough that battery +punto would do it. Don't throw money at it just yet .

just to add to the above comments only use heavy duty jump leads not the cheep ones sold at service stations.
Has it got the large amp fuse holder on the red battery lead, its the black box on the positive terminal, if so check that this fuse has not blown .

Battery
Thanks. I charged the battery up but its no good so I have just bought a replacement. Now there is no ignition light or any power at all. Maybe I knocked something or a fuse? The terminals aren't a great fit (its not a LR battery) but they seem tight enough. Any ideas?

Hi
Personally would first put a multimeter on the new battery to ensure what the Vdc are, then would give the new battery a full charge
Whilst its on charge use ur meter to check the fuses in the engine bay and do a visual inspection of ur earths connections, including using use ur meter to check the earths
What is the make and CCA/ AH of ur new battery plse, thks

told you 8)
is your new battery charged? would not be the first comming off the shelf empty
is it fitted correctly? + & - that is?
did you do a hard reset first?
note:(nothing to do with no ignition light not on although)
and even if new, you have to charge them BEFORE FIRST use atleast 6 Hours to be completelly full BEFORE first start..Best regards

It could also be a faulty alternator

Check the earth is OK by putting a jump lead between the - terminal block and a suitable earth on the bodywork then try to startMust stop buying shiny toys....
