Hi )
Assuming the bonnet cable inside the LH footwell still moves/slides then best place to start looking is remove NS headlight and feel inside/upwards through the empty recess for parted cable ends. Shout if you can't see what needs done. (This assumes you've released bonnet by squeezing-out the grill which then gives access to prise aside the L & R catches)
Re. the noise it seems more a rattle than a deep clonking so maybe your crank and rods are OK. Pull off the cover and listen to the L & R bank, see if sound seems to come from either camshaft ?
My knee-jerk would be a bearing on an ancillary off the fan belt - alternator, water pump, steering pump, fan. If you pop off the belts and run the engine briefly you'll see if the noise stops or not. Keep the loose belts WELL OFF the bottom pulley, it can snag there with sudden dangerous results.
Have you been losing water or fluids ?

LMK (PM perhaps) if you can't get the grill(e ?) out, there's a trick with a wooden spatula, like a stiff wooden scraper you'd find in a kitchen.
I did this recently with a D4, I'm pretty sure the clips at the TOP are the same D3 vs D4, bottom clips are different D3 vs D4 but in both cases from memory bottom clips just pop out pulling by hand.
Once the grill(e ?) is out then opening the bonnet is MUCH easier !!
