Hi, I am looking to buy a new to me D4. It will be used as an everyday vehicle and also to tow a 1800kg twin axle caravan, I have up to £25k to spend. Can anybody advise the best year and model to look for around that budget. What years and or models to avoid please and any essential maintenance that could not be missed.
Regards Tim Patrick

Wants to be 65 plate or later which are euro6, to future proof yourself.
Google land rover sdv6 crank failure/engine failure, obviously they do not all fail, but they are damned expensive to fix when they break!
As for all the does and donts, just read every post on here for a week or two and you will then be quite clued up.

I do also find forums a hinder on times - as this is where you find the % of failures. So it always looks 1000x worse when a high % of the forum comes to report failures. When actually the total amount of failures is a small % and 1000’s of Discos are on the road with no issues. Defender 110 2.4 TDCi Utility Station Wagon.

You can get a lot of vehicle for significantly less money at present. Even some main dealers are listing some late D4s for between 20-25k, whilst private or non-franchised dealers offer better vfm.
Personally I would try to avoid having the sunroof which is standard on the HSE - we have a late D3 SE (high spec but no sunroof) and a MY13 D4 HSE with a sunroof. The latter hasn't caused issues (yet) other than being quick to heat up if the sun comes out, but we feel it is a ticking clock.
Assuming you are looking at later vehicles you will be getting the 8-speed box which we find to be better than the 6-speed. Plenty of power too. Personally I don't like stop-start that the later vehicles have but assume that this can be by-passed if that is a problem for you.
Wear and tear/renewals/maintenance will depend on what the vehicle has been used for, but service history (proven) is the most important factor. Our 240k mile D3 often feels better planted than the 120k D4,possibly because more parts have been replaced!
Other than that it really depends on what spec is important to you and how far you are prepared to travel. Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE
Previously:

110 V8 CSW (220k)
S3 109 hi cap pickup (ex RN)
S2A 88 Safari SW with lpg conversion (bloody lethal)

Having owned both a 2014 D4 (Euro 5) and a 2015 D4 (Euro 6) engine I'd strongly recommend you go for the Euro 6 model. The difference in gearbox mapping is also pronounced and gives a stronger acceleration and overall smoother drive imho. Yes, adblu is a pain but the newer the model D4 the better off you'll be is my opinion...

EU6 engines, though theoretically the same bhp, feel significantly “livelier” than the EU5.
I’d get the highest spec you can, otherwise you’ll end up retrofitting things you wished you had.
At that price I’d buy from a main dealer and get the one year LR extended warranty. 👍 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

If you are towing a 1800kg Caravan.....check the detachable towbar when fitted to the 'receiver' for excess play/movement while you are looking at a prospective purchase.
I have recently bought a D4 MY2014 EURO 5 and have discovered my tow hitch flaps around like a hanky in the wind whilst located in the receiver.....and I tow a 1300kg single axle Caravan on occasion. One of my main reasons for buying a D4

I got, in June a 2013 Reg low miles and Full LR service history D4 HSE Lux with ZF 8 speed Box
Its got loads of fancy kit and I love it.....
I got mine from an independent dealer for £20k with 12 months platinum RAC warranty, 12 months MOT, serviced & Timing belts changed (as it was 7 years old, which is the recommended interval)
mine doesnt have stop start or Add Blu... Note that the later models with stop start & Ad Blu will save you £200 a year in road tax.

I spent more than intended after my TD5 was written off in an accident last year!
As mentioned above, going for a EU6 model brings some future proofing - I'm going to move close to Edinburgh, who will be introducing a low emission zone which might preclude earlier vehicles from entering. Or make it expensive.
I also tow - in my case a 2.6 ton RIB boat. Reading around, I decided that the removable tow bar came with the risk of it removing at will. So went for the LR "heavy duty" tow bar - luckily my car had never been fitted with a tow bar, so no risk of the removable one having damaged the chassis - well worth reading up.
And the oil level sensor - v much a low point in LR engineering. It's prone to fail - and changing it requires removal of the sump, which requires removal of the front drive shafts, which require....... V little change from £1,000. So, have the vendor show you it working! Especially as there is no dipstick - suddenly having the car tell you that the oil level is critically low is un-nerving, even if you're sure it's OK.....
But, it's a great car to drive, loads of power & I love mine Disco 4 65 Landmark
