Snapped crankshaft TWICE!
Posting on behalf of my friend. He has a 2007 D3 with 100k on clock. He missed an oil service and crankshaft sheared. Had engine rebuilt, only for same thing to happen 2k miles later. Now engine rebuilders say it's an oil starvation issue to big end bearings.
Never heard of this before. Anyone had experience of this? Might be wise to check for this if anyone falls foul of the same fate.
Feel very sorry for him. I keep telling him D3 is a great vehicle but I don't think he agrees with me

There have been issues with big end bearings spinning in caps and blocking oil ways. How did they rebuild his engine where did they get crank and bearings from would have thought it would have had a warranty with the rebuildMY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Don't know how rebuilt or where crank from. Warranty invalid as he missed an oil change!

That sounds odd if it has only done 2000 miles it is not due an oil changeMY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

I don't want to interfere in a very touchy topic for some, but from an engineering point of view a rebuilt engine should be treated as a new engine and therefore have an oil change just a thousand miles into its new life.

Maybe I've not been clear. Here's sequence of events:
1. Oil change missed at 12k miles
2. Crankshaft shears 12k miles later (oil still not been changed)
3. Engine rebuilt with new crankshaft
4. Oil changed at prescribed intervals after rebuild (by main dealer actually) & car driven within prescribed rpm during run-in period
5. Crankshaft snaps again 2000 miles after rebuild
6. Now rebuilder says oil starvation issue that was not picked up during the rebuild.
Anyone ever seen this 'oil starvation issue'? I know about the slipping bearings issue but surely that should have been resolved when new crankshaft installed.
No idea where parts came from. I've seen photos of the snapped crank & they're not a pretty sight.

So they are paying for another engine?“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Well we'll see. I can't see why he should pay another 4k.
Oil starvation issue that was not picked up during the rebuild.
Surely when you rebuild an engine one ensures that all oil ways, however small, are clean & clear.
I think the engine builder has effectively admitted that he is at fault by admitting that the issue was not picked up during the rebuild.

Sounds like it wasn't done by LR's official rebuilders, but the dealer. Mark.

Right, now engine rebuilder claims FIVE out of SIX injectors were faulty, causing erratic running and this snapped crankshaft.
Are there any experts out there who can confirm if this is possible or is this Bullsh*t?
My friend faces another four figure bill for a SECOND engine rebuild. I smell a rat personally....

Badly leaking injectors can trash an engine as unburnt diesel is washed down the cylinders and into the sump. It is not the rough running that does the damage but the loss of normal lubrication.
Clearly I have no idea what your own injectors were up to.
