hi all
my drive way is on a slope when i go to the vehicle in a morning i start engine etc but when i go to select gear it makes a clunk when i remove from park and shift stick seems stiff.
when parking the car should i select park then put hand brake on or select hand brake then put into park. this clunk only happens when i park on my drive not when i park on a flat surface

I've always put the handbrake on first and then selected park. Seems to work providing you've also had the footbrake on so no forward motion as you're puting the handbrake on.. You could really go to town (although not sure about how safe / steep your drive is) and pause in neutral (N) ; feet off foot brakes to allow the car to settle on the hand brake.. and then select "Park".
I don't bear any liability though if it slides away...

In an auto you have a 'pawl' thats a hook that fits into a slot when you select park. Therefore it is simple on a hill, footbrake, hand brake, park. By selecting park first the 'pawl' hooks in solid and that makes moving the lever difficult as the car is resting on a tiny little hook, which could also break.
The 'clunk' is the strain of the 'pawl' coming out of the slot, not good.

Just remember that the pawl is verytiny and by using it first to park you place 2.5 tonnes of car on a pin about 1cm x 1/2cm. Then apply the parking brake it holds the tension on the pawl. Add to that the hill and bingo, trouble later.

Unless you have one of the faulty ones. I believe there is a recall in the USA of LR3 with faulty gearbox bits that affect the park pawl/ratchet system. I did not think it affected UK vehicles though. Club 18 - 30 (I wish !!)

Gareth, it sounds to me that when he parks on a slope he applies the 'park' select first placing all the pressure of the car on the hook and pawl. Then applying the park brake adds the final pressure, hence the clunk when deselecting park.

that is exactly what i have been doing BN. i think its because i am used to driving a manual where i used to pull up, apply foot brake, select neutral THEN apply hand brake before getting out. i have just got to change my habbit and do it in a different order
