D3 or D4?

Having spent weeks researching D3 and looking at hundreds of adverts I then come across a very nice D4 with 110K full service history inc cambelts for £7500.

Didn't want to spend that much but its hard to dismiss the fact its a much newer car for not much more than my original budget of £5k-£5.5K

Decisions?

Its the crank shaft failures that put me off.

What engine? Early D4s came with the 2.7 engine fitted in the D3s so its less likley for the crank to snap and will have the later oil pump fitted.

I also do wonder if some of the numbers are also from shoddy repairs, that fail again.

Obviously not all of them, but I’m guessing the 3k recons you get on eBay or NWS can’t last that long

I also suspect that some failers could be put down to cheaper oils and filters being used in some cases

@ robpenrose
@ LRD4GAP

Isn’t that wishfull thinking of an allready D4 owner?
What i read, crank failures on these engines are not necessarily very high milage or older D4’s

I agree, the percentage can be rather low... but then again i know a lot of designs who never have such major issues....
it IS a fact: WHEN it happens, besides the replacement engine itself, the swap job is body-off so expensive also.. it needs to be taken into account....
 Best regards
Harold

D3 and D4 have their foibles. I wouldn't worry about the crank and get a D4. Thumbs Up

Laughing I think the marginal gains in fuel economy are the least of your concerns. If you have to worry about fuel economy and road tax then this is not the car for you.

i have to disagree completely,

the d4 is significantly better on fuel and it not a concern just a bonus, plus a myriad of other benefits of the d4 over the d3, i do alot of towing (agricultural) as well as mixed driving, meaning your 'marginal' gain is extremely significant, if you doing poultry mileage perhaps its not? Shocked

you would be foolish not to buy the newest you can afford, definitely go d4 and 8 speed, pref post 2014 is then its cheap tax, but cheek with reg

my early d3 was cheap tax (post march 2006) then i got a 10 d4 £500+ tax then a very late 16 landmark which is add blue etc and is again cheaper tax.

speaking of tax anybody heard what next years cost is going to be for a D4 ?

I feel eventually they are going hit a 3.0 V6 diesel really hard and it wont be too long in coming IMO
