Design challenge
Hey all, been wracking my brain on what should be a fairly simple design challenge so putting it out to the wider brain trust.
I’ve got the 2m awning on the D3 which is attached to fixed brackets onto the rails. This fixing is perfect for normal driving as it keeps the overall height to the same as the roof rack, which still lets me into 2m height car parks.
The issue I have is I want a method to be able to raise the height of the awning by around 4-6 inches when i use the awning room with it without the need to dismantle the whole thing and replace with bigger brackets, I want to be able to turn up, raise it and be done.
I’ve been thinking along the lines of similar hinges that they use on lifting table tops (below) which raise and remain parallel but obviously these hinges aren’t made to take the type of stresses that an awning in the wind would put on them. And there’d be the issue of keeping them upright….any ideas?

I have seen, at the Adventure Overland show, just such a thing. On a Land Cruiser, the owner was like me very tall and that's how it came up in discussion. He was also using windproof mesh, which was the first time I'd actually seen it in "the flesh".
The whole awning was raised up by about 6" by using a simple bracket connection which was two flat metal (can't recall what) strips, hinged like scissors. One strip bolted to the roof rack, the other to the awning housing. there was a hole in the later strip which was used to lock it into place against the roof rack.
It meant the awning was raised up, but the downsides were that the whole awning was, when erected, further to the front of the vehicle and that there was a gap between the top of the awning and the roof rack. Although I think he might have said he had a solution to that. Presumable a panel of sorts.
