Oil separator help....please. |
|
Good evening all. I have run into a spot of bother with the infamous oil separator. I have been progressing a couple of jobs. I have replaced the HPFP belt - I have the scratches to prove it too! That is a bit of a test of patience but it is nothing compared to the oil separator.
What's that got to do with the HPFP belt ........ Absolutely Nothing! But while I'm in there I needed to change the glow plugs so the separator needed to come out. It was a battle getting it out, I twisted, pulled, pushed and levered and in the end the brute force approach saw it removed. I have replaced 5 glow plugs there is one that although it came undone won't pass out past the HPFP so it can stay there!
Anyway, I can't get the oil separator back in. It won't play the game. I have shortened the legs and it still won't go in. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong here. I do know it isn't going back in the way it came out and twisting it to the left gets it close but then it jams tight at the back somewhere. I've been battling it for a couple of hours and need some help, guidance and encouragement swiftly followed by a large G&T at this rate.
Any hints, tips, tricks or pics would be greatly appreciated P L E A S E.

Amazing what a couple of G&Ts will do It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Hello Nige. Well you see sometimes you have to do a bit of lateral thinking. As it happens I found a great post to do with replacing the HPFP and in there I found a reference to removing the steel fuel pipe from the pump to the RH fuel rail. On the basis there was nothing to loose I took the time to undo the pipe and get it out the way. The separator literally just dropped in place with little fuss; in fact with the pipe removed the I put the separator back in less than 30 secs and that is not an exaggeration!
So I can only conclude that for Vin 7A onward you have to take the fuel pipe off but for earlier cars the wiggle it and twist it manoeuvre is the way to go. I believe the early pumps have the fuel pipe coming in slightly lower down and in a straight line so it doesn't foul the cyclone part of the separator. The high pressure fuel pumps have different part numbers so there is a difference in there somewhere.
And....M3DPO you're not wrong
Anyway, my other thread will have the details soon once I finish this round of work and get the photos sorted.
