Steering rack replacement |
|
Has anyone replaced a steering rack on the disco 3 2.7. Auto. My local indie wants 4hrs labour plus alinement. Totalling over £500 without the rack.
Is this something I can change on the drive way. I do have mechanical knowledge and axle stands and IID tool ect

Yuppp,
4 hours seem about right, since there is always the possibility something doesn’t get loosened on an old motor…..
Can be done at home, but a 2.5 or 3T motor does need some proper axle stands if you need to get under it at work…
Wheel alignment is not possible without alignment equipment…
If you measure before and after, it is possible to get the same as before alignment… but was that right?
After how much years of use?
100quid an hour labour? Rather Expensive to dutch standards… 65 / 70 quid is the norm here..(€75) Best regards

Definitely doable on the drive, as mentioned make sure you have decent stands.
I did mine a little while back and it took me about 4 or 5 hours. I fitted a recon one for a couple of hundred £, I would've gone for a OEM recon one but I'd just put a new turbo on and didn't have the funds. I'll be happy if it lasts me a year or so.
Wheel alignment will set you back about £50.

That’s great. I have three ton jack and stands from SGS.
Cars just cost me on wheel bearing and prop for mot needs cam belt as well so funds short
Will try it next week and let you know thanks again

Can definitely be done on the drive using regular clamp stands.
22mm hex for wheel nuts
Raise vehicle, chock back tyres
Remove both front wheel
Remove relevant splash guards
19mm hex for toe rod hub nuts
24mm wrench to loosen tie rod end nut
Screw off tie rod end, measure thread distances
Screw old tie rod nut to previous distance onto new rack
Screw tie rod ends onto new rack
10mm socket on the PAS fluid lock plate bolt, th. Noten wiggle off.
10mm or 8mm hex wrench on wee bolt holding lines to chassis
8mm hex wrench to loosen bolt tightening the C clamp the holds the steering pinion to the universal socket joint coming from the steering column. Note: completely remove this bolt, otherwise you can't remove the pinion shaft.
21mm wrench onto the nut holding the rack to the chassis, 19mm hex onto the bolt, and remove x2 for each side. Note: on replacement, use blue thread lock on the nut.
Now for the worst part; wiggle that thing out from under the car. This bit stumped me, so if anyone has advice on how best to get it out, please do say here. Seems very difficult to do without removing the tie rods completely, as the pinion shaft gets stuck in all sorts of ways on things.
