Greetings and 1st technical problem

Hello Everybody! I have just bought an 06 Discovery SE and would just like to say what a great and really useful site. Have used a lot of advice on this site already and have only had my Discovery two weeks.

I am hoping someone will be able to advice me on a problem. My engine seems to make quite a loud chugging noise accompanied by, what sounds like, a fan belt slipping noise although not as loud. It only happens between approx 10mph to 30mph under acceleration. There does not seem to be any loss of power.

I have taken it back to the dealer who (although agreeing he can hear it) cannot find anything wrong. He then told me he drove a Discovery of a similar age and heard the same noise but not as loud.

Just wondering if anyone else has this problem or has any suggestions.

I should try another dealer. The technical bods on here may be able to advise you.

cannot find anything wrong = Plugged into computer and no fault found. Lots of dealers have lost the art of problem solving . . . .

Welcome and go find another dealer. "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Will take a guess and say its either Pentland or Stratstones. Unfortunatley this is pretty normal, even worse if you go west and use Shields, thats why I am taking mine all the way down to Lakeland for its next service in 2 weeks time.

Get them to check the exhaust link pipe from each bank to make sure there is no splits in it, Exclamation

Could be a belt tensioner pulley on its way out. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Oh yea. I forgot Embarassed I had a similar sounding problem. Dealer diagnosed worn bearing on a belt tensioner. Had new aircon compressor under warranty. Think mine stopped grumbling initially when I turned air-con off. But that "fix" didn't last for long "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Thanks for all the replies.

At last Stratstone managed to fix it. Apparently something to do with fuel lines being wrongly routed causing excessive vibration. Seems strange thats what caused so much noise but its fixed anyway!

I think the viscous sound is more of a roaring noise than a crunching noise - at least thats what ours sounds like Smile
