Is your car a true company car, are you being taxed as a company car? I have a 'company car'. They give me money monthly, I choose the car (HSE Thumbs Up ) and dealer and lease. I am not taxed on this as a company car. However the company does have a 'car list'. This I could choose from but only on the basis of the car, nothing else. This would have been a company car for tax purposes.

The poster talks about in his initial post of a 'company car list'.

This sounds interesting Razz . You get a monthly amount to buy a company car? Do you pay tax on this, who pays for fuel, servicing. Is this what they call opting out of the company car scheme?

Asking as there is some great price about for a 1yr old D3HSE, but the company car tax puts them out of reach, since I don't have to buy brand new, It could be my option to hop it to a D3 when my time comes along Question

i don't want to take it too far off topic so feel free to PM me Thumbs Up

I opted out of my company car 2 years ago and purchased my disco.

I get a monthly allowance ( this is supposed to cover depriciation ) and i get an amount per mile i use the car for work. This covers fuel , servicing , insurance and tyres etc.

The first year this covered the cost no problem ..this year with extra high fuel costs it has not ...although i have had 3 milage allowance increase's this year Shocked ...and now with fuel back down to about £1.20 per litre im recouping a bit back .

No tax is paid out of my wages so i get full allowance....so i save there aswell.

If it wasent for the stupid fuel increase this year i would of been a very happy bunny ...not necessarily made any money ...but havent lost any ..and i get to chose what car i want whenever i want ( apart from i have to have a diesel !!!)

npinks...

You need to speak to your employer as to whether they allow opting out and what they pay as an allowance.

I changed job this year and there was a company car scheme (took one look at it, saw the first line that said they had trackers on them Censored Censored and shredded the list).

My employer pays me an amount monthly, plus mileage and I can claim back a tax rebate from Mr Darling. I bought a 9 month old HSE and while out of pocket a bit, its worth every penny Bow down Bow down . First time I have owned a proper car and its a joy to drive. Thumbs Up

Speak to your employer Smile

A car allowance usually given as part of an opt out scheme (getting to become an old term these days) is effectively additional income and as such is taxed as per your wages - 20% or more likely with us lot here, 40%.

The difference between what I get from my emploer per mile and 40p for the first 10,000 miles and the same but up to 25p for very mile thereafter and I get 40% relief on the total.

So you don't get the 40p and 25p as standard then ?

You get less and have to claim back the difference ?

well this question started a good debit, however it seems to be a wide open questions and only getting into it does it state figures 70k what is being asked here ???? a company car is finance different from personal so from my point of view it's an invalid question!!!!
BUT WHY NOT GET A COMPANY TO SPEND IT'S MONEY ON PROVIDING STAFF TRAVEL!!!!
GO FOR IT
