Honest opinions please.

I am just coming to the end of my 255/60/18 Pirelli Scorpions and was considering the General Grabber AT2 265/65/18 as their replacements. Can all you guys who have done this give me your honest opinions on the Grabbers. Things like will I notice more road noise or will the cornering be worse etc. I appreciate I should get more than 20K out of them but dont want to compromise the brilliant ride I have now. PS i also notice the Grabbers are rated slightly lower than the Scorpions !

Dont play with tyre sizes use 255/60/18 and you wont go wrong in AT2

Just fitted Grabber AT2 in 255/60 - 18 and used them on a road trip to LRO show and on the off road course. Fantastic performance on and off road, even switched off Desent Control with no worries.

Did the 20" had a lucky escape so have decided to stick with the originals. I have spoken to the wheel and tyre experts here and neither will spill the beans on the 20" debate. I know they are about to release a 20"as i have seen them on 10MY but to be honest my Scorpions are so close to being illegal now I just need to get the tyres sorted by Friday Pm.

Fit the standard size AT2 on 18", oe the new Pirelli ATR on 19" - you won't go wrong with them Thumbs Up
 LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Why the Confused ? I think you've already answered your own question - just fit THE RIGHT SIZE (255/60 R18).

I changed my old Pirellis (with 45000km) for Grabber AT2s a couple of weeks ago and have now done 2500km with them fitted. If anything the ride feels even smoother, but maybe I'm just trying to make my credit card feel better Laughing

On road I can honestly say that I don't notice any difference in noise levels....I'm sure that they technically make 1dB more noise or something like that, but you CANNOT notice it at all....they are, for all intents and purposes, as quiet as the Pirellis.

As far as off-roading goes I don't need to say much that hasn't already been said on here....on loose rock/stone and dry mud they grip much much more. In mud, they also have much more traction than road tyres - I certainly noticed that the TC was operating a lot less when in mud up to the bottom of the doors.

I also tried out a skid pan two weeks ago with the Grabbers. Here are the results (they surprised me):

Picture the scene....a standard 190bhp D3 with road tyres doing emergency braking tests in both dry and wet.

My remapped ±230bhp D3 doing the same tests with Grabber AT2.

Remember that both start from standstill at one end of the track, give it full welly and then slam the brakes on at a predefined point some 200-300m away (I can't remember exactly how far it was).

Taking into account that I had a bhp advantage, you can assume that my D3 was probably travelling easily 15-20km/h faster than the standard one when I crossed the braking line.

In dry, my D3 took around 1m longer to stop than the standard car. In the wet it also stopped 1m longer than the standard car. Assuming that I would need more distance to stop do to the increased speed I can only conclude that my AT2's did not affect braking in any way...how's that for scientific optimism Laughing

What surprised me the most (although it's to be expected with modern ABS controlled brakes) is that the D3 brakes as well in the wet as it does in the dry when you give it some - you just need to have to confidence to stamp as hard as physically possible on the brakes and not let up.

As far as cornering goes I've done the 'wet roundabout test' close to my house with the Grabbers and the point at which the DSC kicks in seems to be the same. To be honest if I was driving constantly at this point then I would feel comfier with road-tyres, but I would also be expecting to kill myself soon because the D3 is not the right car to drive on the limit like this everyday..

For 'normal' cornering and stuff, the Grabbers don't seem to have any problems.

YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BE ABLE TO FIND THE AT2 IN THE 255/60X18 SIZE AS IT'S THE O/E SIZE, BY FAR THE MOST POPULAR SIZE WE SELL FOR D3. Thumbs Up

On the way to the West Midlands meet last night i had to stand the car on its nose for an emergency stop cos some dopey taxi driver had to stop quick in front of me to avoid a boy racer.
On the new Grabbers there was no worries.

been running AT2s for a couple of months - have not looked back - no issues on road (i.e. not experienced any loss in grip/handling on tarmac), towed van all way to cornwall and back, messed about off-road and still Very Happy

maybe notice a slight increase in road noise every now and again - but not something that will bug you

besides - they look 8)

i think you know what to do next..................

My scorpion are almost shot as well, what are we talking about for 4 fitted AT2 (PM me if you don't what to stick your prices up here ) - no chance or a group buy I suppose Thumbs Up
