I've towed approx 6 ton of palleted stone on an Ifor Williams tipper .I can't remember what size the trailer was but at a guess its weight would have to be close on 1.5 - 2 tonne. The D3 towed this from South Dublin to Wexford , about 80-100 klms with no problems .I dont know what the legal parameters are over here TBH.

The above is just my experience and not a recommendation Whistle I 'd go by Kens figures Whistle

In the UK, there's also the age/date you got your licence issue... If you passed your test before 1997 (like me - just!) you're fine. If you passed after it, then it's more complicated. Various documentation seems to conflict, and I wouldn't like to give the exact situation, but what I'm pretty sure of is that a friend of mine can't tow a boat with a D1 as he passed after 1997 Sad

You are limited to a vehicle / trailer combination not exceeding 3500kg on the post 97 licences unless you have taken the additional trailer test

Perfect! Why don't they just make it that simple on the licensing page!?!?

Because simplicity is an alien word in a top heavy bureaucracy, and it would cost jobs in the civil service Rolling Eyes

Then pre-97 or post 97 with the trailer test lifts this to a train weight of 7500Kg I think??
 Cheers

ISTR that the max weight of the D3 is ~ 3200kg so with the max 3500kg trailer it's F heavy but not quite up to the 7500...
 and theeeeennn......???

DOn't you need a special driving licence in the UK for towing over 750kg?
We habe B (vehicle up to 3.5T) and BE vehicle up to 3.5T + trailer over 750kg.

Obviously Ireland is not worth speaking about concerning rules...

If age is an issue then could tow 100 tonne !!!

Seriously though... the issue being left out here is the weight on the towbar vis a vis the spec for the air suspension???? Does anyone know what that is?
 Near enough 40 degrees South!!!

I think towbar nose weight is 150Kg (its in the manual somewhere).

And what everyone else said above, recent licences don't include so many free categories, those who passed pre-97 like me can drive up to 7500kg, which in the case of D3 is classed as 3000Kg D3 and 3500Kg trailer I think.

Unless you have one of these slushboxes to connect the engines to wheels, don't forget to use low range when pulling away as well Wink
