How do you make the RAI watertight??

Following on from the 'snorkel pictures' thread.
The merits of a home made watertight snorkel were discussed.
Some have also made their RAI watertight.
So I am opening up a thread specifically for input on how to make the LR RAI watertight.
So please feel free to give step by step instructions & pics.
All will be gratefully received.
Thumbs Up

Buy a snorkel....!

You'd have to get every joint watertight. Block all the holes up in the elbow. Would be easier to get the safari snorkel. And sell your rai on here.
How To ? - Change your Brake Disks Pads Shoes Sensors August 2011 NEW V1.6a

thanks 'Noel', but I'd rather keep the RAI and adapt that.
Totally understand your points though.
However for me, it just has to be watertight enough in case of momentarily wading too deep.
The current RAI would just suck water in, where as if it were sealed to some extent, there is far less chance of that happening.

Unless your RAI is fitted loose, I cant see how it would suck in much water if you dip momentarily.

You could use that soft foam window seal stuff around the edges for some extra protection.

Won't be fitted loose ....TFC fitted it Wink

Just don't like the idea of all these holes.

The more holes & gaps, then the more chance of water ingress IMO.

Of course.

But you'll be amazed at how dry the engine bay stays when wading.

As long as you don't stop in the water for a long time, you'll be OK. Anyway, if your that deep where you need to protect the internal pipework, your electric's will get Censored anyway.

I've driven at an angle with the RAI's 'box' under water and it never skipped a beat.

Folks,

with all the electronic in the car, I doubt that the air intake is the limiting factor. Which other ideas did you consider to make it more waterproof....

Initially thought the same, BUT!!!
Surely it's better to get your electrics wet than have water induced into the engine???
No matter what, there will always be a limiting factor.
But I'd always fancy the least damaging option first.

I used a product called RUBEROID, its a rubber/neoprene damp proof course they use in brickwork. comes in rolls of 4" / 6" / 8" widths. I got mine from a building site I delivered too as you only need a little, approx 12" x 6". Although it wont stop a torrent of water, it supplies a gasket between wing and bracket, and bracket to RAI. Works for me.

Although as I said its piece of mind Ronp, not a solution Thumbs Up
