| Should I blank off the EGRs??? |
|
I've been wading through the threads on blanking the EGR Valves & removing the butterfly valves. Needless to say my head is a bit spinning with many things I don't understand but it seems a good thing to do, however I gave a few questions. Both cars I'll be doing this are 06MY autos.
Has anyone done this and had problems?
ISTR that dealers blanked off EGRs on TD5 Discos, has anyone had a dealer do this to a D3 (when out of warranty)? Whether as a fix for the problem or on customer request?
How much have folks been charged to fit the blanking plates (or BellAutos kit). Bear in mind DIY for me means Destroy It Yourself.
Cheers!

Despite the 'cure for all ills' approach on here, I would never have considered doing this to the blue one. I've seen too many scare stories about LR rejecting warranties if the EGR system has been tampered with. I keep wondering if they (LR) know something we don't......
However, I understand the principle behind doing this job and I can't see any negatives to it. At the end of the day, it's your motor and it will be out of warranty in a couple of weeks. Happy to assist with grubby hands if you want....... The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

I think youi've hit the nail on the head there John, In Warranty - Don't do it. Out of warranty, no real negatives & probably some positives.
However, I know that Hobgoblin had probelms with error messages when he did his MY07 (ISTR) toof off the blanks & all was fine again. But many on here HAVE done them with no problem.
I think I'll leave mine until out of warranty, then blank them if they start causing me problems. How To ? - Change your Brake Disks Pads Shoes Sensors August 2011 NEW V1.6a

Did this mod to my MY06 yesterday (it was out-of-warranty as of last September!) and everything seems fine. Am in the process of writing up how I did it, with photos, and will post it in my gallery sometime tomorrow (I hope!!)
I used the Bell Auto Services kit that not only blanks the valves, but actually removes the EGR pipes and blanks the holes into the butterfly housing. In the process, this removes the stub pipes that project into said housing, removing what is quite a large obstruction to the air flow into the engine, not to mention the large amount of gunk that has built up on the stub pipes over the last 50K miles!!!
Further update tomorrow!

What about extended warranties, such as the Tesco one? Has anyone asked the question of them to see what the situation is?

If you just fit a blank, rather than remove the whole EGR pipe assembly, it's less obvious that the EGR system has been 'tweaked', and the blanks can be fairly easily removed before any warranty work if you so wish. Once the blank is out, there's no easy way to prove it was ever there D3 TDV6 S 2005

Took mine out a while ago and was happy with the reduced lag . Put them back again as the car had to go in for an exhaust gasket - nobody was any the wiser. Took them out again this weekend

But you still have to remove the butterfly right? Andy

You don't have to remove the butterfly - the link to the actuator can be removed, and the butterfly secured in the open position using a small self tapping screw. At least one person on here posted pictures of that, as they couldn't get the butterfly flap off the spindle. Then the dealer would need to look very closely to spot anything out of the ordinary! Dunno about that lads , mine was able to tell something was amiss using their diagnostics.I owned up as to what I had done and 2 + 2 = 4.They recommend that we do it apres warranty.MY06 for the record.Mine is the only D3 they have seen done so have no feedback on later models.
