Tyres

galaxie500

I had exactly the same tyres fitted by a LR dealer when i brought mine. Towed a caravan within two eeks and nearly had a serious accident. Car was all over the road and was not stable above 40 mph. Realised the issue after checked tyre pressures and went back to dealer. Initially they would not do anything, then contacted insurance company and police. Insurance company said car was not covered without the right load rated tyres, Police informed me the car was not road legal and if stopped or involved in an accident I WOULD be done. Dealer was made aware of this and put four new tyres on at their cost without any more issues. I also spoke to trading standards and they wanted the dealers name to take their own action.
Hope this helps. Thumbs Up

sorry to throw another curve ball, dont forget to check the age of the tyres fitted, see the side wall, it will be a 4 digit number in a lossenger shape , say "2506" would mean the tyre was manufactured on the 25th week of 2006. Some tyres will last longer than the recommened 5 years but at your descretion Shocked

Thanks for that info Russell.
I've emailed my brother about this. He's a police inspector and has a few contacts in the traffic department. Will let you know what happens.
I think i'm just going to go ahead and get the tyres done myself. There's nothing to stop the supplying garage from putting on used legal tyres or cheap and nasty new ones. they did say they can get the correct weight rated tyres for 40 quid but theres no way i'm going to do 500 miles a week in a 3 ton car on tyres that cheap. you get what you pay for and i'm not keen to economise on tyres.
I don't think the garage did this maliciously so wont contact trading standards. I never noticed till after i bought the car and cant blame them for not noticing either. I didn't even know tyres had weight ratings till this happened.

Thats a pity, Galaxie, I had a completely different reaction from the Main Dealer

Phoned them on Friday, "no problem sir, we'll have a look when it is in on Monday"

Took it in today, they said they'd check it out, went to collect it at 4.00pm, a brand new Wrangler tyre, correct rating and it even matches the one on the other side. No charge, all covered under Warranty / Goodwill Mr. Green

Very impressed, I was at least expecting them to ask for a contribution as it was part worn

So thanks Galaxie, without your post I wouldn't have a brand new replacement tyre, makes me feel bad now Embarassed

Thanks Bushwanderer. I don't think i've ever been called sweet before. And thanks for the offer of impregnation but i'll have to decline a wander in your bush- i've more than enough babies already.

I've finally got a definitive answer on this from those that know- the traffic police. I suppose they've got to be useful for something.
The garage has done nothing wrong. Car is legal and safe. Traffic cops spend all day driving overweight cars very fast and have had no issues with tyres of lower weight rating. Only thing they wouldn't do is go over 120mph. Not dangerous and no penalty points if fitted. I guess towing and offroading not a good idea though.
Insurance would refuse payout if proper weight rated tyres not fitted so for that reason i now have wrangler HPs all round.
If anyone wants a couple of part worn Kumho tyres for a RR let me know.

Only other point is that Scottish law often differs from English so can't say if the same applies down there.

Forget Points

An incorrectly speced Tyre is dangerous the load rating is there for a reason don’t fook with it

Seen many a tyre destroyed due to incompetence/ ignorance
