it may not be delivering enough current. In order to charge all our gadgets, and yet keep the wiring tidy, i have a 2A 5V adapter powering a mini usb hub. This works for everything except the iPod. If i direct connect the power supply to the ipod its fine, but the current limits in the hub prevent it from working.
There is a help page about this on the apple site which i cant link for you as im on my phone, but get a car charger for your ipod and all should work fine as itll deliver enough juice. Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

Apple changed the pins used by the dock connector for charging when the 3G phone was launched. iPod's have always been able to sync data over Firewire or USB cables but when they were first launched you could only use the Firewire connector for charging. Then there was a long period when iPods & iPhones could use either Firewire or USB for charging and would happily accept 12v (Firewire) or 5v (USB). When the latest iPod's and 3G iPhone was launched, they dropped the Firewire charging capability altogether (which uses different pins on the dock connector). Only accepting one voltage reduces the manufacturing costs of all the newer iPod's and iPhones.
Because it was easy and cheap for vehicle chargers to use 12v, many used the Firewire pins for charging. Of course these now won't work as chargers for any of the new iPod's & iPhone 3G's that need 5v USB.
The fact that your old charger doesn't work has probably nothing to do with the current.

crewscontrol right on the money there,
it's that they did it but nothing we can do about it, apple also dropped firewire on the new macbooks so all old portable drives etc now rendered useless

Found same, old charger didn't work. No issues with LR ACM kit, for other car use a cheapo ciggy lighter to USB from Maplin and an old Ipod cable, works a treat & only cost a few pounds!

After buying and then throwing away two cheap 3g chargers I decided to buy one of these XtremeMac iPhone chargers. It will fully charge an iPhone from completely flat to full in 20 minutes without the annoying chime of charging/not charging going off every couple of seconds. I also bought a 2amp 5v PSP Ignite charger for £1.49 which also does the job used inconjunction with your sync cable. Both these items came from fleabay Club Exped trailer
Club Timed Climate
Club Flappy paddle steering wheel
Club 300bhp
Club iPad
Club Pie and Peas
Club National Luna Stella conditioner
