accidentally got 35 miles to the gallon in sports mode !! |
|
drove from Wales to London yesterday. Filled up with Shell ultimate diesel. Dropped her into sports mode to effect a carrier style take off on a short slip road and forgot to change back. When I reached M25 I noticed I was getting 35 mpg ( this was definitely the case and not a mis reading of the average speed !!) This was travelling at around the 70 - 80 mph mark.
I havent done the calculation on cost of posh diesel versus the saving on fuel. I normally get 28 mpg so this was an improvement.

Every Auto D3 I've driven changes gear too soon and the revs drop too low which is why (I think) mpg isn't as good as it could be, presumably keeping it in Sport (but not driving it like a dragster) will keep them high enough to be more efficient The End

Simon, I'm going to contradict you there, my new 8.5 model year auto changes gear about 500 rpm lower than the 05 model I just got rid of.
The new one will keep revs at or below 2000 rpm most of the time unless you drive it hard. The old one would always be reving over 2000 until you settled into a cruise. There seems to be much less torque converter slip on newer model.
Old one was laterly struggling to acheive 23mpg, new one is averaging 28 since I got it 2500 miles ago.
I've got to drive to Abersoch and back tomorrow, so will try the sport mode thing at report back

There was another thread about this recently. You're not alone in finding driving gently in sport helps economy for the reason Slimer mentioned. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Gently as always but not slowly. Maybe Ill try this without the ultimate diesel and see if its the same. This was the second fill on ultimate although Im not sure it has more vroom.
Abersoch reminds me of a trip to Abersoch some years ago. Friend had blagged his fathers granada all singing dancing and he did the best overtake I have ver seen 10 cars on a country lane and he was towing a motor boat. Tractors that put the motor boats in the sea ( Abersoch power boat club) had to be seen to be belived in terms of the rust. Our engine broke down and he was charged £800.00 to get it fixed that was 15 years ago ... see us boys coming or what. I bet they still talk of that sting to this day. It never worked afterwards either.

I do believe that some chap at the boat launch couldn't start his tractor one day, so decided to launch with his Range Rover. It got stuck and was lost to the sea.

............... Have to say the week before "she went" , I was not as 'frugal' with the right foot as I had been for the previous 4 years of usage.
Result - no real difference in MPG (26 mpg extra urban.. calculated using maths, not the D3 )
This doesn’t mean I was tanking it down motorways, just giving it meaningful beans where it was safe to do it.
Hay Ho – Filed away for the next D3(4) .............................. ..............Somewhere in-between my old D3 and what's to come next .........

My 08 is more 'efficient' than my 05 ever was (and that had the benefit of a JE tune), both only change gear when I want though I find (on the manual) keeping the revs somewhere between 2000 & 2500 rpm give best economy and engine response
Keen to see what I can get out of a D4 auto The End

Conclusion, it made absolutely no difference to mine. Drove to Abersoch in normal mode, tailwind, cruise control at 80, trip reset before departure and it returned 27.4 (on the trip meter)
Return leg last night done in sports mode, headwind, cruising at 80, slightly less traffic, trip reset before setting off, result 27.3mpg.

Mine ignores the fact you're in sport mode once you get over about 70 and goes into 6th anyway. Cruise control also ignores the sport setting.
Where I find it does help is on the twisty A and B roads where your speed may vary from 40-60mph. Also seems better in town by a couple of mpg. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
