Spare Wheel & Stowage

I understood when I bought my D3 last month that it had a full size alloy spare.

This weekend I thought it prudent to show SWMBO how to change a wheel on the D3.

I was surprised to find that the spare wheel is a "get you home" steel wheel with a speed limit of 50 mph / 80 kph.

The tyres on the car are 255/60 R18 112 - but the spare is 175/80/R19 122.

Some questions for those more learned than I:-

1. Is the rolling radius of the two tyres the same? If not will the transmission, particularly the differentials, be stressed by running wheels with different rolling radius?

2. I assume that the load rating of the spare is sufficient for a full load. I am reminded of a friend with a Skoda some years ago, who was pulled over by the police with five adults in the car & a space saver wheel. He was told that the wheel was overloaded, and that one passenger must get out before he could continue!

3. Again I assume that a full size 18 inch 5-Spoke Alloy Wheel would fit in the spare wheel wellould I be best advised to get such a wheel rather than relying on the steel space saver. In which case has anyone one for sale?

IMHO i would get a full size spare in the correct size for peace of mind.

It might be worth a phone call to AJS (Site Sponsor) to see if they have any spare wheels in the right size Thumbs Up

1) Rolling circumference the same (or at least close enough). No problem

2) Load rating is higher than the standard one. No problem. I suspect plod was being an officious cock with your mate? May be wrong, but I can't see how it would be appropriate to supply a space saver that would cause you to leave your family sat at the side of the motorway Laughing

3) A full size 18" wheel and tyre fit in the same space.

Watch out for a worn set on eBAy, either sell the other 3 here or start your tyre collection! I'm on 19 wheels & tyres and 5 loose tyres (mostly stored in out dining room to be), plus the 10 wheels that are on/under the 2 x D3s. Whistle

I make it 0.3 mm diameter difference but I could have my sums wrong ! of just be talking rubbish !

18" 457.2 mm / 2 = 228.6mm plus 255 * 60% = 153 mm = 381.6 mm
19" 482.6 mm / 2 = 241.3mm plus 175 * 80% = 140 mm = 381.3 mm

Not sure what LR state but imagine you really do not want to travel far on a space saver anyway.

Not so sure about showing SWMBO how to change a spare, have you searched on the site for Jack failures !.

Usual 50mile/50mph limit or whatever the EU sanctioned equivalent in those totally counter-intuitive metric measurements are. Counting in multiples of 10 will never catch on. It's madness I tell you Evil or Very Mad

actually just realised there is a mistake in the above, I should have halved the wheel diameter or doubled the tyre wall calculation !

The anser is ask an expert, where is my coat !

Thanks everyone.

I have decided to go for another Land Rover 18" 5-Spoke Alloy Wheel & Scorpion tyre.

I have exchanged e-mail with Andy of AJS who can't help at this time.

I've posted a wanted ad here & will keep my fingers crossed.

Half the radius of the wheel. Thumbs Up

18" wheel/tyre has a circumference of 2397.66mm

19" space saver has a circumference of 2395.78mm

<1% Thumbs Up

I have 4 new Maxxis Bighorns 265 70 17s on a set of 17" rims ready to fit on the car tomorrow in preparation for an Event. The 5th Maxxis tyre I ordered hasn't yet arrived and until it does, I only have my AT2 255 60 18s as spares.

Can I get away with using one of the 18s as a spare until the 5th Maxxis tyre arrives or would I damage the transmission/get bongs and warning lights if I ended up with a 265 70 17 and a 255 60 18 on the same axle? Should I take 2 18s as spares?

Steve, is replacing the puctured Maxxis on a 17 with an AT2 on an 18 what you suggest or removing both 17s and replacing with 18s on the axle the alternative?
