Right hand almost out.
Left hand tight.
I am coming to the opinion that there is an inverse relationship between how well I know cars and how far from Britain they are screwed together. Previous car, Subaru, know nothing about it. First car, Citroen BX, knew it screw by screw. Landrover Discovery, had it a month, getting to know it a little bit too well.

Wish I'd seen this a while back, mine came out and damaged the bodywork but my mechanic managed a fix on it. White, poverty spec 4.0v6 model with Black 20inch alloys that previous owner fitted but I kinda like.

My right strut pulled right out so after much hesitation I gabbed a hole saw and drilled a small hole from behind the trim in the pillar. Through two layers of steel and voila I can feed my ring spanner, with nut held in place by tape and washer held in place by grease, through the hole I drilled and line it up with the hole left from where the bolt and captive nut pulled out.
With a large washer on either side of the panel everything seems fine. Only time will tell I guess, but it sure was a much cheaper and quicker fix than having a panel shop cut, weld and paint to repair.
To drill the hole I simply lined it up by sight and it sits just below where the roof trim finishes. It could have been about 10mm higher but I didn't feel like pulling the roof lining out to gain access. Now D3 HSE TDV6 - waiting to be modified
Now 94 ES D1, 4.6, F&R lockers, 34 inch Simex's, warn highmount, plasma & HID's
Gone 87 RR, 4.6, F&R lockers, 34 inch Simex's, warn highmount
Gone 82 RR 4 door, 4 ltr, rear locker, 32's, warn low mount

I wish i had seen this earlier! Right strut pulled out yesterday, captive nut fallen into pillar. Disco has rear light guards which have secret holding screws I can't access ( I've got the two visible by the tailgate) Anyone know how to get the guard off and will I be able to get and replace the captive nut with my hand up the pillar??

The light guards usually have two screws on the inside of the tailgate, and 2 screws on the outside edge of the guard. However, this won't help as there is no access into the pillar from behind the lamp.
When my stud pulled away, it had to go to the body shop, where they cut a hole in the D pillar to place a repair plate into the pillar. Then repaired and filled the hole, followed by paint. Big job.
I'm not sure if there is any other way.
If it was up to me, and it was not a vehicle in warranty, I would make a plate to mount the stud that rivetted onto the the outside of the broken mounting hole.

Thanks Gareth, I'm usually pretty good with fixes, having started on midgets (2) an assortment of others including a Spitfire and Herald convertable and 3 great Range Rovers (74,82 and 86). The Disco is a whole new ball game and has been great till now. Handing over for servicing will be a new experience!
Thanks again

Remember to check the lower locating nuts also.

Caught it just in tiime with the RHS almost out. Was able to add thread locker and tighten back up with 13mm open wrench. It seemed to tighten up fine so I got lucky. The LHS was tight.

Mine on the RH side has broken this morning, weld nut has fallen into rear lamp area, leaving a nice hole where it used to be. Anybody got any info on best way to fix this?

Thanks to this thread I inspected mine and found the right hand one to be hanging by a thread! Removed clip tightened up all in 5 mins. Wouldn't have been too long before mine fell off without this forum!!

The horror stories of cutting holes and replating are pretty scary but a D3 member has a much easier fix. Sounds faffy but MUCH better than hacking holes in your D3 methinks.
