Under the circumstances, you many wish to install the upper hatch manual door release mod similar to that outlined in my gallery link below. I was "blessed" with the loose upper right side screw, however because of these posts, I resolved the concern before it was one. I therefor got busy and figured out the manual hatch release mod and installed same, also before that problem happened.
Ultimately LR got a new air compressor out of me, (file in Gallery re that as well).
I wondered what year of 3 you have as I would assume LR has resolved both the upper hatch release cable design and the loose screw thing by now. I know that the replacement cable is all metal now, (plastic L has now changed to metal in the new units).

Both my struts seem to show no issue with the nuts and appear secure..
They struts do however a lot of play in them (i.e. you can twist them easily Left to right and right to left) but I would thing this is normal.
It takes a while to go up when you open it mind...oil it I guess...

| play is normal; time is temperature dependent |
|
I would agree that the play you refer to is normal. The attachment "hinge" is of a ball design so it tends to rotate every which way.
As to the time for the upper hatch door to lift, I think that is temperature dependent. The cooler it is, the slower the lift, and if really cold, it may not lift at all. That said, I have not yet had any problem with my struts even in -30C temperatures.
I did have the loose bolt thing re the upper right hand side but after discovering this thread, I tightened the ball bolt in time to avoid the near impossible task of reattaching it. 2005 LR3 HSE 4.4L V8 petrol; Zambezi Silver; 18" x 10 spoke wheels; underside of glass roof located hidden cellular patch antenna; Traxide Dual Battery install; Air Suspension ECU 35P fuse disconnect; PIAA 2500K Yellow Ion H11 Fog Light bulbs; CounterAct LT-2 Capacitive Corrosion control; LLumar AIR80 Blue clear Infra Red blocking side window film; Liftgate manual release; Schrader Valve "air in" mod to OEM air suspension reservoir tank; Akebono ceramic pads on OEM solid vented discs.

Just checked mine and both tight, disconnected the uppers to get a ring spanner on properly. Whilst they were both off with the tailgate propped I filled the sockets with grease and thought while I'm here I may as well do the bottom ones as well and removed the whole strut. Cleaned off the whole length of each strut as they were both very dirty and refitted them. The tailgate shut looked a bit grubby so once again thought I may as well clean this at the same time, I could have gone on around the car but enough is enough. Well done this is an important post as to rectify a damaged mount would involve a lot of tricky work to make it good again. I have added my vote accordingly. Thanks, Dave.

left hand solid. Thanks The smiley is very apt. The ball thing is I think the same as the one at the bottom that screws into the lower hatch door re the retractable cable. I have had that one off and I think there are no more than 8 to 9 mm of thread, and closer to 8 - you live right. 2005 LR3 HSE 4.4L V8 petrol; Zambezi Silver; 18" x 10 spoke wheels; underside of glass roof located hidden cellular patch antenna; Traxide Dual Battery install; Air Suspension ECU 35P fuse disconnect; PIAA 2500K Yellow Ion H11 Fog Light bulbs; CounterAct LT-2 Capacitive Corrosion control; LLumar AIR80 Blue clear Infra Red blocking side window film; Liftgate manual release; Schrader Valve "air in" mod to OEM air suspension reservoir tank; Akebono ceramic pads on OEM solid vented discs.

Just checked mine on the right hand side. Cant believe it was still attached, must have had about two turns left from falling off completely.
Didnt have any loctite so tightened up the nut, wasnt sure how tight to do it as was concious of doing any damage to the one inside. Will keep an eye on it for the future !! Left hand side was OK, just needed a small adjustment.

Just checked mine and phew only a couple of turns left on right hand side , left was tight . I see that they must have had the issue before on the right and lost the nut as there is a circular plate riveted in which is not on the left , the rivets are a bit loose though so maybe have an issue with that in the future .

Another one here! Just noticed mine was about to fall off and was well bent out of shape. Fortunately the nut was still attached and I was able to tighten it up. The other three needed nipping up too... Andy

Actually I meant 5! Check the nuts holding the lower tailgate supports too. Those weren't tight either. Andy
