Suspension fault and loud booming noise |
|
Hello
I've had occasional suspension faults since I bought my car in April, but over the last couple of days they've got much worse. There's now a loud booming noise every time I start the car, which goes on for a few seconds, then the suspension fault light comes on the dash. The car is now riding at access height, which makes for a very bumpy ride!
Has the compressor conked out?

Yes!!
Be very careful driving on the bump stops and a large thump could set off your airbags.
See my post mayday mayday for more info.
Do you have warranty?

How could a large thump whilst on the bump stops set off the airbags?? (Unless of cousre the large thump is the sound of hitting the car in front) Have a nice day!

Meant a large pot hole really.
That was the advice from the RAC when mine went pop!
Probably would be ok if a small old pot containing some burnt bails hit the car All things shipping, storage, transport. UK and worldwide.

Hmm, hadn't thought of that re the airbags! Though the car isn't completely on the floor - there is clear space between the top of the wheels and the arches both front and rear.
No warranty either Been phoning local dealers/independents for prices, but they all need to run diagnostics first to give an accurate estimate. Cost for the compressor part alone seems to be in the £350 to £450 mark though!
Can an AA man plug in to get the fault codes, or does it need to be done through a LR computer?

Dave this is very dangerous misinformation that you have been given. Clearly whoever told you this has absolutely no idea how the restraints control module interprets the crash signals required from the multitude of sensors before it decides on airbag firing strategies. It just couldn't happen because of the vehicle riding on the bump stops. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Well I took off the cover, expecting to find it full of muck, as mentioned in other threads, and found everything extremely clean! However, I was greeted with a shower of silica gel balls, and one of the two cylinders had completely sheared - the dryer I guess. Everything else looked fine to my un-mechanically minded eye. Doubt I am capable of changing the dryer unit, but at least there's a chance of a smaller bill from the dealer.

The dryer is available as a separate item but the compressor will have to be removed o fit it.

Thanks for confirming that mouse470, it did look like I'd need to take the whole thing off to get to it. Will leave that to someone better qualified! Will post back when I have more news.

Update: got the dryer fitted today, and it's done the trick! Car now raises and lowers without issue, and after several short journeys today, no re-occurrence of the fault light on the dash. Very pleased - drove away marvelling at the smooth ride, after the bumpiness of the last few days. Total bill for parts and labour was £92 inc vat.
