An Anoraks D4

Agreed a deal to buy a D4 today Very Happy It's a '13 plate XS in Aintree green:

It was a toss-up between this and a BMW i3, but the strange doors on the latter didn't suit us.

Now though, the plan is to sell my D3 and buy something smaller for the daily commute, whilst the D4 remains the family bus!

It's out with the old and in with the new at Anorak Towers, as I wave goodbye to my trusty D3. Just time for a quick side by side photo:

With the D3 out of the way though, it's time to bring the D4 up to spec. Some of this has been achieved by adding parts removed form the D3 or, in one case, swapping parts between the two. So, minor stuff like the extended valve on the spare wheel, the RLD protector plate, the dog guard, boot mat and third row seats mat were all removed from the D3 before sale:

It's a small detail, but I also retrieved and re-used my modified fixing studs for the tow electrics cover. They're one of the most useful mods I've done:

The most involved task was swapping extended roof rails that I'd fitted to the D3 with the standard ones that came with the D4:

Fitting details for the extended rails can be found HERE.

New parts fitted include a fixed tow bar and a cubby box fridge, more of which in another post.

Tow Trust TL1 Tow Bar

I spent this morning fitting a Tow Trust TL1 fixed tow bar. I was also expecting to be fitting towing electrics too, having asked the LR dealer to check whether they were fitted. I'd bought the kit from Dan at Duckworths and printed off a thread from here that gave good instructions for removing the rear bumper.

Imagine my surprise when I took off the tow electrics cover to discover that the 13 pin socket was already fitted Rolling Eyes :

The TL1 kit is complete with tow ball, which I wasn't expecting, and clear, simple installation instructions:

First job is to fit the central body to the chassis receiver. With a smear of copper clip on the mating faces and locking pin, it went in cleanly and was soon locked in place:

Next came the two side arms, which were initially just lightly bolted to the central body until all of the bolts were in place. The outer ends of the side arms are secured to the chassis rails with 130mm bolts and spacer tubes, that have to be fed into place within the chassis. All very easy.

With all of the bolts suitable greased and tightend, the final task was to bolt on the supplied Alko compatible tow ball:

I'm very impressed with the TL1. It's a substantial bit of kit that inspires confidence - more so than the OEM fixed bar.

We're now ready for the D4 to fulfil one of its' prime roles as a caravan tug.

Cubby Box Fridge

The other significant new part fitted today was a cubby box fridge, bought via Duckworths recent group buy:

Fitting is relatively straightforward, although I did spend ages trying to get the centre console trim to line up properly again.

First step is to remove the cup holder moulding from the centre console and the trim panel from the front of the cubby box area. Both just pull up with a little bit of force. There are two metal friction clips on the trim panel that came off and had to be fished out of the void beneath:

Next, remove two screws that secure the water shedder from beneath the cup holders. It's worth noting that the emergency release wire for the EPB is located under this panel. Remove a further two screws from the top corners of the moulding behind where the trim panel has been removed from. These are quite tricky to get to and the sides of the centre console trim may need to be eased outwards to provide access.

Remove the torx bolts from the lid hinges and pull off the silver hinge trims. I spent quite a while looking for hidden fixings here as these trims didn't want to let go. They need to be sort of twisted and pulled up to release them.

At this point, the existing cubby box interior can be lifted out. Ours has the USB supply to the lid, so there was also a bit of faffing with the cable grommet before it would come free.

Fitting the cubby box fridge is, as the saying goes, the reverse of this procedure, although it's also necessary to make the electrical connection. The feed from the car is hidden below the water shedder with the connector wrapped in a little foam sleeve. The matching plug on the fridge is tightly secured with cable ties, which need to be released to allow it to reach the car supply.

The fridge in position:

And with everything back in place:

There's a small switch on the front edge with an integral LED to turn the fridge on, which only works when the ignition is also on.

Thanks. I should point out that I've only adapted an idea from somebody else on here that I think used a washer cut in half.

It really is handy if you take the cover on and off more than occasionally.
