Note recommended Mobil1 has moved to 0W40

Been using the Mobil1 5W30 Truck & SUV oil in the LR3

Noted today that Mobil have changed the recommendation on their website to 0W40

when I check for my 02 D2 - they also recommend the 0W40 for that now

Any ideas why the change?

I'm not positive as to why, but will hazard a guess. About 30 yrs ago, Mobil1 was 5W20. About 15 yrs ago, they were able to go to 5W30, and there have been a few variations since. I suspect they've finally been able to prove, test, and reliably manufacture 0W40 which now will last & lubricate as long as the earlier products. I've worked in the edges of lubrication oils and the improvements have been amazing (well at least to us chemical engineers) but the amount of testing and validation that is needed is mind-boggling, as it should be.

These improvements won't do much for us in Oz (we had 104F or 42C here Thursday and don't get down to freezing) but to you in the more arctic climes there will be an noticeable ease in cold starts.

0W40 has been the standard for some time in the US for certain European cars - it's factory fill on Porsche, and is the recommended fill on VW for example. (Previously VW used to be 5W30 centric)

Mobil used to recommend their (SUV) 5W30 for both my Land Rovers, but they now state that 'The company that manufactures your vehicle recommends this Mobil 1 product, or has a special requirement.' and direct you to 0W40 only.

So something has definitely changed - I'm guessing that additives have changed and that the 5W30 no longer meets the complete spec for Land Rover engines.

My experience with 0W40 has been excellent over the years - so I know it's a good product.

Just interesting to see manufacturers moving to it as the 'only' option from the Mobil camp.
