| Ignition stalling on start up |
|
As the title suggests Our Discovery 3 V8 HSE sometimes makes a funny noise when turning the car on, Sounds like the ignition is stalling / taking it's time.
Would this be a battery issue as we've done some serious 4WD with the stock standard battery that is provided...

Hi Hamish,
Possibly. Or it could mean that you are not doing sufficient long runs in order to keep the battery charged.
Why don't you give the battery an overnight charge and see if that makes a difference.
Best Wishes,

Hamish,
It's not necessarily a battery problem, but I'd suggest going ahead and putting it on overnight charge and seeing. I wore out two batteries in my V8 D3 and each time there was never anything untoward when starting it. It usually showed up by causing various "safe mode" events and other electronic gremlins when driving. Also does the odd sound happen when the engine is already warm or just first morning? You might want to open the bonnet and listen to see from where the sound emanates.
Sorry I can't be more helpful but my experience was that all the sounds from the V8 were 100% Jim Dowell - D4 HSE TDi, 12,000 hydraulic winch & hidden winch mount, MTRs, TyreDog, Traxide 2 x aux battery system, fixed air compressor, Dolium roof rack, MitchHitch.

It only makes the sound when it's been idle for a day or few.
It's literally like it's trying to pump extra power into something?? to get the whole car running... Like you know how you hear something when you shouldn't... Along with a few Scretches, Cranks, What Not...
Edit: It's like Just before the actual engine is running it starts the engine up for a second or so but it keeps repeating for a good 5 seconds...

Did you ever get this resolved?
Heard the same yesterday and today when starting my LR3
Hadn't driven it for two days after an 8 hr drive across country - slightly concerned at the strange noise and poor start from dead cold. 08 LR3 SE V8 - 02 D2 SE7 V8

I'm taking it for it's 3yr service on the 4th of June so i'll be sure to notify them.
The issue seems to be occurring more frequently tho.

Try switching the ignition on and letting the low pressure pump get the pressure up before turning it over. If it works better you may just need a fuel filter change. "A society that will trade a little liberty for a little order will lose both- and deserve neither"

Second position on the ignition just before starting the engine. It should prime the low pressure pump. You may get a high pitched sound as it does so. "A society that will trade a little liberty for a little order will lose both- and deserve neither"

Had mine checked by the local stealership as part of the 60k mile service.
The only thing they noted was my air filter was clogged, and that was changed as part of the service.
Have to say that since then it's a faster start with a stable idle. 08 LR3 SE V8 - 02 D2 SE7 V8
