I might as well jump into the fray here. I just started lurking on the site a couple days ago to get information as we contemplate an LR4 purchase.
We have the Porsche variant to the VW - Cayenne S with the 4.5L gas V8. It is a very capable truck, both on and off road, but very different than an LR4/D4. Our pepper has the full air suspension and locking difs, so that helps bring it more in line with the LR4. Without that suspension, it would be no match for the LR4 while off the asphalt. I'm not sure if they put that in the VW, but I would say a must to compare it to the LR4.
It has much less cargo capacity than the Lr4 due to the different rear roof lines and it drives very differently. The Cayenne drives more like a sports car while the LR4 reminds me much more like a short wheelbase Jeep.
If you are looking to get off the pavement and want to haul more gear, I'd go for the LR4. If you are doing more highway driving, then I'd lean toward the VW.
In all though, I believe the LR4 is a more versatile truck.

Unnecessary quote removed
Well on the Porsche forums they call the Cayenne a pig, so I was trying to be nice and not lump the LR4 in with that. Actually here on this side of the pond, the damn things are so heavy, the get special consideration for taxes.

Might be looking at Subaru Legacy as this is to be a road car but usable in proper winters, not an offroader. Can maybe be ar$ed a bit.

Oh sweet suffering..... I see VW have managed to hit the bonnet of the Treg with a flat shovel - that looks wrong.
Still, there may be some bargains to be had on the current model clearout

I think they have missed an opportunity to make the new Touareg a 7 seater. There was quite a lot of speculation that it would have been... but it seems that they haven't, even though they have stretched the wheelbase.

Speak to Kaine on the RRS site he runs the My Treg site. I would of thought the RRS Vs Treg comparison would be better or the Audi Vs D4. DS3 TDV6 HSE

Well I read the VW stuff and I have to say that it sounds impressive. The look of it is not to my taste though.
It's going to come down to a combination of personal taste, cost, what you need it for and ultimately what YOU want. Your preference for looks etc will be different to someone else's and regardless of what anyone says, I have always believed these are emotional decisions. We buy what we each like and then find good reasons to make the decision appear logical.
Me? I prefer the D4 but truthfully I actually MUCH prefer the FFRR, it's just that I can't afford one of those.

The Touareg was one of the cars I took for a test drive before deciding on the D4, not that it was the test drive that put me off, it was more due to the longer wait for the new model.
Always had a soft spot for them and certainly wouldnt totally rule one out in the future as much as I LOVE the D4.

if you want a car that handles as well as a porsche goes as well as a porsche, is way cheaper than a porsche, but has the same engine, chassis, gearbox as a porsche, oh and is far better looking than a porsche then get a treg....
or you could buy british...
The VW does not handle as well as a Porsche Cayenne!
Whilst the platform is shared between the 2 models, Porsche Engineers made a number of changes to improve the Cayenne's handling. Current:
D4 HSE 3.0 TDV6 Auto
Stornoway Grey with Ebony - 20" Wheels - Heated Steering Wheel - Adaptive Lights - Full Size Spare - Privacy Glass - Side Tubes
Porsche 996 C4S
BMW E38 740I Sport
