Any one here have Lpg on a V8 ?

I had a D1 V8 with LPG for 10 years. No problems running it at all. Had tanks under floor and kept normal petrol tank, so no loss of load space, and could use petrol as normal if LPG refilling wasn't available where I travelled. Only noticed a slight decrease in power if going up 1:7 hill with 2 ton trailer. I had to change vehicle only because of accident damage and could not find a D3 V8, or I'd be driving about in one now that you could come and look at!

Thanks for the info.
It's not for me as mine is a TDV6 but a friend has a G4 V8 and was either thinking of selling due to fuel consumption
or converting to LPG.

I look after 2 ffrr with lpg. Slight power loss is not noticable unless towing heavy. As long as the engine is warmed up and shut down on petrol it should not be a problem.
I personally prefer my remapped tdv6 to my mates v8 d3.

If converted correctly there should be no discernible difference on LPG compared to petrol. Unfortunately many conversions use equipment that is ill suited to the engine. Any fuelling defficiencies on modern engines will cause faults and thus illuminate the Mil.

All sequential systems automatically switch to LPG once engine is warm, there is no requirement to switch back to petrol before turning engine off.
Unfortunately when it comes to LPG there are a lot of people who know very little and then make assumptions based on their poor knowledge. Personally I`ve been converting for 13 years and importing and distributing equipment for 11 of those years.

I have had a 2006 V8 converted and couldnt get rid of the engine check light
All down to quality of injectors and setting up!
But after buying a brand new V8 in sept i decided against doing it due to the issues with warranty and also learning that the jaguar engines have soft valves and LPG being dry and running high temp will wear out valves in 60K unless you get the lube system
There is only one guy i will trust to do it and he is on this forum - will find his details and post later

Shutting down on petrol is not a requirement but my customers want their engines to last. Waking up the petrol system before shut down ensures that the additives present in petrol but not lpg are in place before the next turn of the key.
I am sure someone will see fit to call me an idiot again and i suppose 18 years experience just isnt enough.
I will stick to the lpg converter i have been using for the last 6 years for my customers.

If on an engine with `soft` valves the conversion has a proper, electronic, valve protection system fitted then the valves are properly protected at all times.The system we fit injects the fluid to protect the valves in through the LPG injecors into each cylinder.
Just to put the record straight I`m not calling anyone an idiot, just pointing out my personal record and offering genuine advice, gtrhaggart you appear on here as a normal member so I can only assume and advise.... unless you are `in the trade` in which case perhaps you should consider becoming a site sponsor so you can post in your own right

I own a G4 V8 and had it converted a year ago, I was told that I will get the engine management light on untill the engine got used to the Gas, I took the disco back to the LPG installer after a month so he could check if everything had settled down, It had, but as I had been to landrover in the mean time(suspension fault) he could not turn the light off because he could not access the Disco's computer, I had to go back to Landrover so as they could turn the light off,No problems & as Gas is half the price of petrol, I think it has been money well spent. I also got a suprise when I went to change the V5 to duel fuel, The Road Tax is £200

I had a LPG car for a few years with a Prins sequential system. I also added the lube kit, just as a precaution.
Never had any issue's with the engine light coming on or anything like that. But it does require proper installation and more importantly decent set up & servicing.
In my opinion running a car on LPG caused less wear as the oil stays so clean.
If I had a V8, I would have LPG
My family in Holland are starting to use LPG from cold with a new system, rather than having to start on petrol. Please support Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. They make a difference.

Switching back to petrol momentarily before shutdown will have as much effect on the valve life as telling them a short bedtime story.

I drive a lot and am/was thinking about a LPG installation. I still didn't do it. By now the system would be paid back already.
The road tax system in The Netherlands is changing so I am not sure what to do now. I may have a system later. The only draw back is where to have the tank fitted. For me it would probably be where the spare tyre is currently and have the spare tyre on the roof. But then I loose roofrack space when on holiday. I don't want the spare on the back.
I had 2 LPG converted cars before a 1979 Toyota Landcruiser 4.2 ltr 6-cyl and a 90 with a RR V8. Both started on LPG with no bad effects. Only when it was really cold I had to drive carefully the first Km's in the toyota otherwise the vapouriser frooze up. Roel

My G4 RRS hs been converted to LPG (done before I bought it) and I'm fairly happy with it. It still throws the EML on occasionally, usually if I get stuck in traffic after a long motorway run or if I'm just pottering about town. Having had it back to the installer to be set up a few months back and having him explain the conversion, I now know I could have it so the light doesn't come on, I just wasn't convinced of the solution...
I do ~30k miles a year, so the running cost of the old fart gas makes it worth having
Yes, I'm concerned about the valve wear issue but after 20k miles it's not showing any signs of distress and I do run it quite often on petrol as well. The valve lubrication system I'm not so sure about, it doesn't seem to be controlled well enough to ensure each cylinder gets the right amount of oil, but hey, I'm willing to be proved wrong on that. In my view, if the issue is to do with soft valves / seats, then do a proper job and replace them with something harder, or don't convert the car to LPG at all.
There's no real noticeable difference in power although it does lose steam up gentle gradients quicker than it does on petrol. Towing is fine, albeit easily into single figure mpg.
Would I pay for the conversion myself ? For the JE jobbie with converted cylinder heads, yes I probably would, just for the piece of mind but I'd have to run it for at least 100k miles to feel like I'd had the value out of it. Would I do what the previous owner of my car did and convert it for half the price of the JE one with scant regard to any of the issues, certainly not. In hindsight, having found out more about the conversion since I bought my car, I wouldn't / shouldn't have bought it, considering the high mileage use I give it.
You pays your money as they say... BV55 YZE, ex G4 Challenge RRS. So not a Disco 3. Well, not quite.

FYI any valve train issues won`t show until about 60k. The valve protection system we fit doses each cylinder via the LPG injector, thus ensuring proper lubrication. Removing the heads and replacing the valve seats is both a costly and, now, unnecessary procedure.
I like to think that as I run two V8`s on gas with this system fitted it shows that I have the utmost confidence in it, this is how I like to promote any systems that I sell and fit.
The V8 in the D3/RRS/FFRR is not the only engine to suffer in this way. We convert many other vehicles that have the same issues, the long term prognosis on all of them when converted correctly, as I`ve previously described, is excellent.
The electronic valve protector is a German TUV approved system developed in Germany for cars that cover high Autobahn miles. The old style vacuum controlled systems do not produce sufficient flow of oil at wide throttle thus many cars in Germany were still getting valve problems even with that fitted. Problem now solved!
