| Useless locking wheel nuts/socket |
|
The standard locking wheel nut and socket are of such poor quality, I would advise everyone to check them for splits and rust. I had to resort to knocking the alloy cap off, drilling a hole in the remains and welding a bolt on to get them off. Luckily I was at home and not by the side of the road or the middle of the outback.

Yep, bin the lockers as they can fail then you are in a bit if bovver! Re non lockers, if you can't get a 22mm socket on them (and off) easily bin them as it will get to the stage you have to hammer on the socket then you'll have fun getting it off. Had changed all nuts on my 2 06 cars at 3.5 years old as most were swollen. Worth having a few nuts in your bits & bobs box so if you have a swollen nut you can swap it out. Can maybe be ar$ed a bit.

Here's my (former) locking wheel nut adapter

And don't trust the wheel brace either
get a good qualty breaker bar (and a spare socket) and torque the nuts up to the correct setting

Just changed all 16 of my non-locking nuts today due to swollen nut syndrome.
A big thanks to TLO for good price and speedy shipment. Why buy a car when you can buy a Land Rover.....because I'm worth it.

I agree, but if you went through the agro of removing the spinning cap why not go to Halfords and purchase a Alloy Security Nut remover, its a reverse thread

Good idea, but, gripped in a cold sweat, I did the drilling bit before the thinking bit. The welding caused surprisingly little marking to the wheel, anyone else trying it , disconnect the neutral battery terminal .
