It doesn't inspire confidence in the brand. I'm very tempted by the D3, but you've got to wonder what it will be like to own privately when it is 5 or 6 years old. On present performance I would imagine not good!

When my D3 is working properly I couldn't wish for anything else. On present experience I would never own one once it passed its period of warranty. I think that D3's values will fall sharply when they get older as they will be too technical for DIY jobs and too expensive to fix yourself.
I had an XC90 before and it never missed a beat, it was brilliant but it also didn't offer things that the D3 does.

That's the problem Oliver. What do you do if you need to buy a car that has to last you for a long time, like 7 or 8 years? I hate to say it, but the answer seems to be to avoid the D3. Nobody seems to fancy the idea of a D3 outside of the manufacturers warranty.

There aren’t any technologically advanced vehicles that can be maintained by a DIY mechanic over and above the normal service items brakes oil and filters. The worlds moved on a bit do you really think the new Defender could be maintained at home?
Cars have evolved all computers crash from time to time you just restart and off you go.
The D3 can be updated to bring the software up to date try doing that to a Ford Crossflow /Pinto

3 year warranty with warranty works is £1100. Not bad really and it has a £2500 limit so would cover mosts jobs. Cheaper than buying a new car! 2006 TDV6 S Auto, Buckingham Blue, for the wife and kids.
2006 Audi S4 Avant Quattro, Phantom black 4.2 V8 for me and the dogs.

Forgot to add not many people pay 30-40K and expect to maintain their vehicle at home there will be a few exceptions to this rule and most are on this web site. perhaps we should group buy a Dealer Ship that would get around the servicing issue

The data they would have used would most likely not include the D3, RRS or latest RR... JD Power are only just starting to include late 2004 registered vehicles now.

I guess next years results will be even worse then!

The Discovery 3 wont be a 30-40k car in 3-4 years it will be a £15k car or less if the residuals keep dropping (by the way What Car have dropped the residual price forcasts by 14% on D3)
It's all a matter of perception, with all the D3 horror stories around people will realise that they are unreliable and spend their money on something with a better record.
I have said on many occasions how I love the D3 but I don't wear blinkers and I see what everyone else is doing. A ten year old S-Class Merc is technologically advanced but there are plenty of those still on the road will good levels of reliability.
Phil Popham of Land Rover has announced that Land Rover reliability is a serious issue and the Freelander 2 should be the start of things getting better (probably thanks to all the Volvo bits in it). I know everyone here loves D3's but when a Director at Land Rover is pinning his colours to the mast, we have to take note.

Reliability issues related to this particular suvey are completely irrelevant to the D3....as the survey content is pre-2004
You are right though ...it's a perception thing ...those that have had a poor experience with the D3 are susceptible to the perception that ALL D3's are unreliable.
Me thinks that's not quite the case though eh Existential Phenomenologist.

Where do I start.......
Suspension collapsing
Tailgate Stuts damaging the body work
Paint defects
More electrical problems than you can shake a stick at
You only need to read the topics on here.
The Fiat Punto won more awards than the Discovery 3. The Freelander Commercial won one of the What Van awards a few years ago. What Van told Land Rover if you'll take a table for 12 you'll get an award. That doesn't just happen for Land Rover it's industry wide so I don't hold much weight to that.
Phil Popham was interviewed at the Motorshow and it was shown on large screens. "Freelander 2 will have excellent levels of reliability as we knew this was crucial to our success. Reliability issues have and in many cases continue to haunt Land Rover but we are totally focussed on turning this around"

Well the perception is either
'Disco3's are reliable - with a few exceptions'
or
'Disco3's are unreliable - with a few exceptions'
Although only a relatively small sample, the general trend from members of this site would indicate the former - IMO
