Command Shift Drivers
Just wondering if any of you are regular command shift drivers, where you push the auto gear lever across and manually select the gear you want? I've been driving with this on and off for a few days and the MPG has improved significantly by allowing me to gear up sooner than the auto box would normally decide to itself.
I would be interested to know if any one uses command shift all the time to?1964 Series IIA SWB Truck Cab - gone

I did wonder about this, in Guernsey the max legal speed linit in 35mph in most places, so it never gets past fourth gear. But then again using command shift I cant make it select a higher gear than that anyway, I think 5th is acheivable at 50mph?

MRwoo, beware... I read in a 'turbo' post that one should [once warmed up thoroughly..] rev up the engine to quite high regions and then slow down on the engine again in same gear. This to clear dirt off the fan in the turbo or alike.. Some inspector of LR told [in that post..] reason for failure of turbo was 'soft-footing' on the throttle...

I use the "command shift" a lot, but it's more for slowing down than early shifting up.
Approaching blocked junctions or roundabouts, or descending a hill, I'll shift down a gear or two to take advantage of engine braking rather than using the foot brake all the way.
Much kinder to the brakes and it means they're still there at the bottom of a long descent when you may need them most
Can't say I've noticed any difference to MPG though, but then I've always done it.Clive

I used to brake on the auto years ago in a Jag XJ40.. Until a mechanic asked me if I realised the difference in magnitude of costs involved in changing pads or an auto-gearbox.. I started to brake again aft

No, never.......Its what its designed for. I like the Game of trying to improove the MPG, then look in the rear view to see a trail of 4x4 haters

great....I'm with you on that one. I like using the command shift because it gives you the old fashioned manual control but with the sophistication of an auto box and no clutch - like tiptronic I suppose. The only thing I have noticed with command shift is when going from 3rd to 4th, sometimes I'm a bit premature on the shift and it's stops me from changing up. I change at 2k RPM's just the same as any other gear but 3rd to 4th sometimes wants a bit more. I think this is more apparent when it's warming up. I know 6th doesn't select where it normally does when its warming up, say 55-60 mph (in auto mode)1964 Series IIA SWB Truck Cab - gone

I still use the box to control speed of descent and the brakes to avoid excess revs whilst doing so. I never ride the brakes down a hill - I'd prefer not to risk brake fade. IMHO, correct selection of road speed and gear before the hill will ensure that the box is not stressed to the point of damage.

You shouldn't. This is precisely what is taught to lorry drivers and it is the correct way to descend IMO.

I use it when I want to hold it out till 6k RPM. I'll engine brake a bit, but usually when I switch it over it means hang on, I'm going pro. 17 Discovery 5 HSE Si6, Fuji White on brown | 07 LR3 SE 4.4 Java Black on Alpaca

The point about the turbo is interesting. DSL is on his 3rd turbo I think and he drives with a very light foot. He regularly gets over 30mpg. I'd rather spend a bit more on fuel than replace a turbo.D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Stu, you comment on DSL getting his 3rd turbo... But did you have the T-prob already? I'm trying to combine data to predict things like diff-failure, turbo-probs etc. So I'm asking members to extend their profiles with year/model/VIN [partly blanked..] / probs with mileage / present mileage / driving style ... so when reading posts the context is immediately clear and saves lots of time on finding out.. Would you be prepared to extend your profile ???
