I regularly get in Merc taxis in Germany with 800,000+ km on the clock. When you speak to the driver they consistently say it is the original engine and gearbox. The only things they replace are bushes, ball joints, discs and suspension etc.
You would never believe some off the mileages based on the condition and comfort of the cars. I'd rather buy a car with high mileage than one with low mileage that has been subjected to short runs.
The TDV6 is a big, lazy unstressed beasty more than capable of huge mileages. Just look at Character's - and that tows all day long!
