Not sure about the D4 but that's exactly how they work on the D3 - in which you use the button on the dash to activate them (or switch them off).

Is this a windup - I thought that's how they were supposed to work. See Topix

That's the way they work on my D4 when you put it in reverse they come on automatically so if you are manoeuvring into a car parking spot they are on but to get them to come on just for the front you have to push the button. I would think they work this way as if they were on automatically they would drive you mad in traffic as the would be going off constantly.

As Hairy Dan says you must activate them by pressing their control button on the dash - and incidentally they only operate at low speed, the moment you go above a certain speed (about 10 mph) they switch off. LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF

thats the same with mine on the Octava, automatic when reveres is selected or there's a button on dash; and again when you are going over a certain speed they stop (about the same speed the doors auto-lock) No matter how bad you are,you are not totally useless...you can always be used as a bad example
