Why a detachable tow bar?

Just thinking out loud, why did LR favor a detachable hitch over a bolted on, but yet very sleek hitch. Look at the one on this Commander:

Or even on my Liberty (Cherokee in UK)

Not saying either is right or wrong, but with the regular one you don't have to worry about it getting stolen, the lock breaking, or ground clearance issues when on (like with a cargo carrier). Just wondering it.

being able

to remove it when you arent towing means that:
~ it doesnt wreck you knees & shins when you are loading the car
~ other drivers dont wreck their front rear bodywork if they park too close
~ removes the slim possiblity of it affecting ground clearance
~ may stop it being knicked....but then only a LR D3/4 driver would want to nick it.

Having said that...the D3 hitch is an awesome piece of kit, well designed & made - well up to the task its intended for.

....also Jag XK......the economy 5.0 litre one...I'm REALLY smitten with this
....& have a Freelander 2 SE Auto...realistic runabout....

I do like being able to remove mine so that the rear of the D3 looks tidy and uncluttered.

a question to the European readers:

the detachable type of hitch shown of picture 3 (cherokee) is legal in Europe?????? LR have this type or receiver for the D3 and D4...and it's soooo multifuntion!

go go gadget towbar

I gives us an excuse not to rescue other offroaders

"I left my tow bar at home sorry. maybe that Cherokee driver with his fitted tow bar may help"
It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

Why a detachable towbar ?

Wink And another reason! My garage being less than 10cms longer than my D3, from the back wall to the up and over door, I would be unable to close the door if I could not detach the towbar ! ( well, not without knocking a hole in the wall ! )

I like the look of the fixed one it shows your up for more than just the school run!

It's the only way I could get a Dixon bate type pin fitting.

Have to agree with CMG here - a real 'could do better' to LR.

I have a fixed hitch on my LR3. It may have affected ground clearance slightly in Moab - but I was happier scraping a steel bar than a plastic bumper Thumbs Up
