| Installing a HID kit on MY12 D4 |
|
Just a couple of tips having installed the HIDS4U 55W Ultimate kit on my 2012 D4....
Firstly you remove the grille by pulling the bottom out horizontally, not up as per the LR instructions.
You will discover that the ballast will not fit the OE ballast area at the bottom of the headlight. If you try to fit it in as best you can, then you will run into trouble with your wires:
If you turn it round to get the wires out of the way:
Then it will still foul the car.
The solution is to carefully trim either side of the hole. The plastic is thin, so do a bit on either side until the ballast will go in. Go too far and you will make a hole in the light, needing repair with Araldite.
Ballast in place:

The spread and cutoff are excellent. I aimed them using maths and a wall, then took them to Kwikfit to have them aligned properly. Was chatting to the guy and he only had to tweak them a tiny bit, so didn't charge! Also, he confirmed they were fine by him for an MOT.

I ordered a kit and then looked at the small print and realised they are not road legal. The kit looked fantastic but had to go back as I wasn't willing to take the risk from an insurance perspective should something go wrong. The odds of that happening are low but it is worth bearing in mind.

The legality bit is complex.
A 35w kit in a Disco with self levelling suspension, fitted headlamp wash and projector lights is going to need a tiny technicality, if it exists.
The supplier will always want to cover itself with disclaimers though.
