EDIT:
Daft comment removed
Why the 57 plate question
Mines a 57 plater and it rattles, ive been running 2 Stroke Oil in it for a couple of months now and it makes it silky smooth,
Its probably melting my pistons and gumming up my valves but the rattling has stopped Only dead fish go with the Flow !

If it's under load, and goes away with a bit of 2-stroke in the fuel, isn't the noise just the high pressure fuel pump working? Mine has been more noisy since a new pump was fitted under the recall a couple of years ago but it doesn't seem to be anything to worry about. For a change

Memories flooding back of my Gamma 500. The smell of the 2-stroke and the sound of the 4 ducks farting turning into a banshee scream with a twist of the wrist. Never did a bike take me to the scene of my next accident faster than the RG500; it scared me in the wet. Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

dsl, When an RG500 has had you you never forget that feeling as the revs rise to 6-7k and then you take off level the devil was after you. for a brief few seconds then you ran through the power band and you hooked another gear.
The engine was a detuned version of barry sheens gp race bike with smaller carbs.

Well if we look at it from basics.
what rev range does it sound at.
Under load, or not.
type of diesel, low grade high grade.
Does it change after service,
Have you got an injector balance printout.
Possibilities.
Cams, little ends, piston slap, injectors,
Mine has a rattle at circa 60-70 mph i put it down to diesel knock.
Is it worse when cold or cold weather.

And a good sunday morning to you all,
havnt got any of those print outs as i have not taken it to the stealers, thought i would try to find out first as they cant hear the dinner bell , or if they do they will want to change it just incase it may go faulty, i am from the repair culture not replace at trial and error, so i think i will as i say let it develope , or when we buy anycar ,com check it out they wont take it up the road , i will get my stupidly reduced cheque , and put it down to an expensive expeirence, hey ime not complaining too much , as i love the silly (old now ) beast, good luck to all
regards mike

Strange you mention this, mine was a bit noisier after the recall, then TFC discovered that they hadn't pput the soundproofing back on one side of the engine.
Worth a check, only takes 2 mins to pull the engine cover and check
