i have fitted a new thermastat and it is no better ref heater being cold all that has changed is the engine will get up to almost normal temperature (the guage needle will be just below horizontal after about 10 miles of driving and stays there. still bubbly i the coolant bottle but its still going! no water in the oil etc and goes as well as it has done over the the last 299, 988 miles apart from some minor issues. I will clock 300,000 on my way to work later tonight!!!

just remembered what I forgot to add is that my fuel economy is dropping is is down to 19 mpg on the dash when is normally reads 29 or more and it is using more diesel would this be caused by a head gasket or cylinder head problem? all seems odd to me

I think I would be checking for a seized vicous fan. Does it sound noisy ? You would be down slightly on power and use more fuel, you would also be running cooler as the fan is over cooling the engine.

Hi
Many thanks for all your replies. I fitted a nre thermostat as mentioned and it was no better but after sitting looking at the old one on my desk two days after me I noticed that the old thermostat didnt have a copper sleeve in the midddle of the thermostat like the new one did. Took the new one back off just to make sure and to cut a long story short I forund this part stuck in one of the heater hoses! Part removed and hot heater I am so happy but couldnt believe quite the symptoms that it showed and it took several attemps with the engine running whilst bleeding the cooling system to renmove the all of the air
