| 50 MPH wobble when braking |
|
I have an annoying wobble through the brake pedal when I brake at 50 MPH.
If I brake at a higher speed the car doesn't wobble at 50, it only seems to happen at exactly 50 MPH, any ideas ? Helping ugly people have sex since 1995 !

have you had new front discs fitted recently?
could be disc run out if you have? From 70, you are braking harder, so wobble not so noticeable.

I had something similar last year.
Turned out to be the ball joints.
I had the whole front wishbones changed and it seemed like a new car.

Could be run out or simply that the wheels were not tightened up in 'opposite' sequence. There was another thread that had more technical detail from CG on the 'warped' disk phenomenon.
Basically if you tightent the wheel nuts a la 'quickfit' style i.e. you go round in a circle tightening nuts 1 to 5 in order, then it may not always sit on the hub properly.
If you tighten the wheel nuts in the correct order i.e. opposite nuts so 1, 3, 5, 2, 4 then it is proven to put the wheel more square on the hub. thus eliminating this wobble. How To ? - Change your Brake Disks Pads Shoes Sensors August 2011 NEW V1.6a

I had a "wobble" through the steering wheel at 50-55mph (no other speeds) when my ball joints and bushes were worn. I knew it wasn't the alignement or wheel balance.

Had the same issue. I ignored it for a while and it got worse, but I never realised this until I had the bushes done - just had Super Pro ones fitted and the D3 has never been so good. It had also developed a clonk when braking and accelerating and a lack of firmness when cornering. D3 HSE

if this has only started since having the discs changed, its more likely to be that. Who did them, and what brand of discs were used? I tried britpart discs on my old D3 and suffered with this. Swapped for genuine and problem went away.

Do you happen to have any part numbers for the "super pro" ones.

What is "disc run out"?

its when the discs aren't running true and fully inline with the hub face (imagine a wheel thats not tighten up properly). Some of the non-genuine discs may not have been manufactured to the same tolerences as OEM discs.
The effect is that when you gently press the brake pedal, as the pads touch the disc, the disc pushes the pads back and forth (as it isnt running central, smack bang in the middle of the pad gap), so you get the wobble you can feel through the steering wheel. If you brake hard, the pads push (hold) the disc centrally, so the wobble goes away.
does that make sense.
